The Political World. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 14 January 1901

— — - — — j The Political World. The New South Wales Parliament has been further prorogued to Wed' nesdav, February 27. Sir William Lyne is still undecided in Ms choice between the Cowper and Hume electorates, for his seat in the Federal Parliament. He ? intends visiting the Hume electorate this week, ostensibly to see how tlie land lies. Mr. Barton seeks the suffrages of the electors of the Hunter, and will speak at Maitland on Thursday night, when lie will unfold the Ministerial policy, which he states ' Will be satis factory to every reasonable man.' If the policy savours of protection he will find a lot of unreasonable men, very much alive in the various States. It is thought likely that the office of Minister of Defence will be offered to JUi1. Thynne, a staunch federalist and one who has long held Ministerial office in Queensland. How long New South Wales is to wait for the .selection of a site for the federal capital is already agitating the minds of several people. We do not...

THE WESTERN LANDS COMMISSION AND HOMESTEAD LEASES. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 17 January 1901

THE WESTERN LANDS COM MISSION AND HOMESTEAD LEASES. TO TnE EDITOR. Sin, — 111 your issue of tlie 25th ult., I notice that in giving evidence before the Western Lands Commission, Mi George ltiddock, of Weinteriga run, says of the homestead leases : — ' If larger areas were granted to Homestead Lessees, the lat ter being already ruined, and j therefore without money, could not take advantage of the con cession, ifcc.' This, Mr. Editor, is a very gloomy view to take of tbe homestead lessees' position ; and one which they as a body, will not feel very grateful for, however well meant. Either Mr. Riddock does not spend much of his time on Weinteriga to get acquainted with H. L. or ho has failed to give a true account to the Royal Commission. 1 I fancy that should the Royal Com mission come to Menind ie, as it is con fidently expected it will do, Mr. Rid dock will find, that the homestead ! lessees will state before that same j Commission ; that they will gladly avail themselves of any ' ...

Cricket. WARADGERY V. LICENSED VICTUALLERS. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 17 January 1901

Crirkct. WARADUEHY V. LICENSER VICTUALLERS. This match was advanced another Htuge towards completion on Wednes day afternoon in the park oval. The Waradgery, with 8 wickets for 217 runs continued their innings : the re maining two lwtslnen, Emerson and Meakes failed to add any to the score, and Harrison carried out his but for 114. The total of the innings being 248. Proctor and Murphy were the most successful trundlers. With a total of 278 required to win the Licensed Victuallers opened their account with Dillon and Darchv ; the former contrary to expectations being clean bowled by Harrison after mak ing four. One for ten, was not good reading when Tom Callaway filled the breach ; this batsman had a piece of hard luck : lie hit one from Harrison hard enough to reach the fence, but in doing so the but broke, and Gibbs took an easy catch. Two for 1 +. W. Murphy joined Darchy who was bat ting splpndidly agiiinst the excellent fowling of W. Gibbs synd C. Harrison, ;jiid knocked up eigh...

Cycling Notes. AUSTRALIAN AND ENGLISH. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 17 January 1901

Cycling Notes. Australian- and English. W. Miii-tiu succeeded in winning the rich Lyne 'Wheel ltace, run in Sydney last week. Martin has won over £800 in stakes alone since the end of November, a record in prize money that has never been approached in Australia before. It may not be, and we believe is not, generally known that the number of revolutions a 28in, wheel makes in five seconds is equal to the number of miles per hour tbe machine js travel ling. Hence if a rider with a 28in. wheel counts the click of his cyclo meter whilst looking at .his watch for five seconds he can at once tell his speed rate. A new Australasian record was es tablished by E. Wilksch (S.A.) at tbe Sydney Commonwealth Cycling Car nival. Starting from the 15 yards mark, this sterling little Dunlop pedallcr carved out a mile in lmin. firt — -)-5s(.cs By the latest American files we note that an important tyre action, which is of interest to Australians, is being contested at Toronto, Canada. The parties are...

Position of State Premiers. MR. BARTON'S VIEWS. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 17 January 1901

Position of State Premiers. Mr. Barton's Views. In answer to a question, Mr. Barton has stated that he, as Federal Premier, was not con cerned very much in the dis pute as to whether or not a state Minister could hold two offices under section 44 of the Commonwealth Act. It was laid down that a member of either House of Parliament should be incapable of being chosen or of sitting as a mem ber if he held any office of profit under the Crown, but a special provision was made that this section did not apply to any Minister of State. So that under these circumstances Sir William Lyne, Sir George Turner, and Sir John Forrest, who are Premiers in their own states, were quite capable of acting as Ministers of the Com monwealth. Really, the ques tion was only one of conveni ence. All the Premiers had important work in connection with their respective states, to which they desired to give per sonal attention. If they wore to remain state Premiers for ail inordinate- length of time, he could ...

Federal Electoral Rights. [Newspaper Article] — Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation — 17 January 1901

Federal Electoral Kiglits. It is a matter of considerable importance that every elector throughout the State of New South Wales should know when, where, and how he can obtain a new electoral right. J The currency of the old rights i issued in 1 8!)4 expired on December 31 last, hence it is necessary that new ones should be issued. As a matter of fact there are no right* in existence at the present moment. The police have collected the names of every eligible voter in the State, and the lists will be re vised at the various' courts of Petty Sessions throughout the colony. The lists are posted up out side each court, and as they are in alphabetical order all one has to do to make sure that the police did not omit his name is to examine the lists. When the Revision Court sits any qualified person will have the right to demand that his name should be inserted in the list, and it will be for the Court to decide whether the application should be granted. It is also within the power of any...
