The New Tyranny. (TO THE EDITOR.) [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 10 October 1891

The New Tyranny (TO IBB EDITOR.} Sir,— The sn called representation of labour in the New South Wales Legisla tive Assombly is practically nothing of the kind, most of the sell-styled labour represeutativeB1 bein-j simply so many trade-union delssates. who havo been returned under what may fairly be designated false pretenpes, seeing that they arc attempting to legislate only for a section of the industrial community, and not for the general interest. All the earlier struggles of trades-unionisms had for. their object the legal recognition of the right of working men to combine ; . now the principal aim appears to be to compel them to combine, no matter how unwilling many may be to sacrifice their freedom and become the helpless slaves of their fellows. Many have joined trades unions simply to escape the bitter persecu tion to which they would otherwise be exposed. In bo doing they frequently incur obligations which their limited means prevent them from promptly meeting, and for whic...

Important Notice. ON THE AFTER EFFECTS OF INFLUENZA. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 17 October 1891

Important Notice. ON THE AFTER EFFECTS OF INFLUENZA. The 'Grip,' or, as it is sometimes called, 'La Grippe,' although it is nothing more or less, in all probability, than the old complaint known in our early days as ' Influenza,' but greatly itensified in all its most painful and de pressing symptoms, is once again amongst us, and exercising its baneful effects upon all sorts and conditions of^ men. The fearful prevalence of the malady may readily be ascertained by making a casual visit to one's circle of business or profes sional acquaintances, when, in five cases out of six, the principal or manager in an establishment will be found absent through a more or less dangerous attack of the almost universal complaint of the day. But the danger lies not so much in the disease itself, which by laying up and taking special care of one's self may be speedily conquered, but in the after effects produced on the system. Past experience has proved that n great many people have become afflicted...

To Men, Wrong-One Man Right. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 17 October 1891

To jBIefl Wrong— One Stan Bight You will be in hingdoni-dme in Itts than welve months ! ' 'Tbu can't live three y-xtri ! ' ? « You are not going to die!' These three prophecies were' addressed to the same man. The last one had the most comfort in it, yet he couldn't tell which had the most inspiration. Here's the story. It isn't pleasant reading at first, but it ' comes out ' all right, as the children say. Perhaps it's better to let our friend tell it himself. We all like the pronoun ' I,' that's why an autobiography is never dull. Thi? relator is a butcher of Auck land, N.Z., and his style is so clear and good, it needs no editing. He says: 'Some five years ago, when lifting a quarter of beef, I noticed a re markable soreness in the small of my back. 1 called a doctor, gave up business, and took to my bed. He persoribed a lotion to be rubbed in around the regiou of the kidneys. This was done, and I remained in bed several days, suffering excruciating agony. At lat-t, having examin...
