Methodist Mission. [Newspaper Article] — Koroit Sentinel and Tower Hill Advocate — 22 August 1914

Methodist Mission. Just now it is a hard mailer to secure a congregation for any meeting unless it be a patriotic meeting. The spirit of patriotism rises to its highest pitch during the progress of a war, and just now in Koroit, with the sending off of our volunteers to serve in the expeditionary force, and the good-byes to " Our Hoys," who have gone to do duty at Qupcnscliff, the town folk of Koroit, and of courso the district people, have been stirred to a high pitch of enllnuiasm and patriotism. There have been so many things to talk about, and meetings to attend, yet the misnion meetings conducted by the Rev. Courtenay Thomas, of Hamilton, in the local Methodist church have been very well attended. The church workers have been endeavoring to introduce the subject of " mission," instead of " war," and their 1 efforts have been rewarded by seeing the good attendances at the meetings. The mission is held in connection wilh the Cen tenary Evangelistic Movement, organised and arrange...

The Climbing Marrow. To THE EDITOR. Sir,-Hver on the "ijui vive" for plants that will prove useful and profitable /or our people, and the couutry generally, 1 have succeeded in procuring the above novel anil prolific vegetable, anil it can be more easily cultivated over a wider range of country than the famous " Guada Bean," which although a tropical plant, has now been grown successfully throughout most of the Commonwealth, and in several districts has obtained the almost inciediblo length of 5ft. 6in. The climbing vegetable marrow is a rapid grower, the vines reaching the length of 10ft. to 13ft., and they should be trained on a fence or trellis. Within a few months of the time of planting the vege tables hang down to the enormous length of 4ft. and Oft., and present a pleasant and surprising spcctaole. When young they provide an excellent d'|ah, and may be cooked in various ways. Tho. flavor is ex cellent, and no peeling is required, as the rind is very tender. The colour is gree...

Commonwealth Elections. [Newspaper Article] — Koroit Sentinel and Tower Hill Advocate — 22 August 1914

Commonwealth Elections. The public interest taken in the European war may overshadow the general elections, which are to be held on Saturday, 5th Sep tember, to* the extent that many electors may overlook election day altogether, unless some measures are adopted to ensure the subject being kept constantly and promin ently before the electors. It is recognised on every hand that at this juncture in the affairs of the Commonwealth no effort should be spared to secure the registration of every possible vote, and for this reason we maku a special appeal, asking that all elocto. s-men and women alike-even at the cost of personal inoonvouiencc, do their duty as citizens, and register their votes without fail, on Saturday, 5 h September. FAREWELL TO KOROIT CADETS. [Newspaper Article] — Koroit Sentinel and Tower Hill Advocate — 22 August 1914

FAREWELL TO KOROIT CADETS. On the invitation of the mayor, borough councillors, and residents, a number of townspeople assembled at the Mechanics' Hall, Koroit, to take farewell of the Koroit cadets who left on Friday for QueensclifT. The mayor, who presided, said the lads were going to have their training in war fare, and some were actually going to the front, therefore it was thought desirable to meet them and express their feelings. War was a most abhorrent thing and a cruel way to decide differences between nations, and some better way of settling national difficulties should be found. Un til then, unfortunately, they must have war. It was particularly abhorrent to Australian people who were trying to work out their national salvation without shedding blood. We were unmolested because of the fact that we were part of the great British Empire. (Applause). She made the seas clear to us and gave us the most liberal constitution in the world to work out our own destiny. It behoved t...
