OUR OMEO LETTER. Friday, May 5. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 9 May 1882

OUR0 OMEO LEI'ER. (PROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Friday, May 5. At the Police Court to-day, before Messrs Easton, Rodgers and Cunningham, Js.P., T. Condon was charged by the police with having maltreated a working bullock on the 12th April last. The offence was proved and the defendant fined £1, the in fliction of the penalty being accompanied by a lecture by the bench on cruelty to animals. The action of the police in this matter is highly commendable, the practice of maltreating dumb animals having be come far too prevalent in this district of late. And now what about the unfortu nate packhorses that are almost daily to be seen staggering with unshod feet and fes tering sores on their backs under heavy loads ? " The merciful man is kind to his beast," and if men do not possess this vir tue, it becomes the duty of the police to see that it shall not be outraged with im punity. Mrs. Thompson was charged with not obeying an order of the court made in April, 1880, to comp.-1 her to con...

OULt SWAi RILACII LEl'TI'rEI (FROM OUR OWN COIRRESPONDENT.) Monday, May 5. The anniversary of the Swan Reach State school "social evening" was hold last Saturday evening, and was a decided suc coss, there being over 100 persons present. The proceeds of the Ivening's entertain ment will go towards procuring prizes for the children attending the school. The concert portion of the programme was very creditably gone through, the Tambo Christy Minstrels being in good form and acquit ting themselves in a highly satisfactory manner. Miss L. Smith was encordd for her song, but her vocalisation was hardly no good as on previous occasions. Mr. Jas. M'Knight, in Sirs. Candle's Umbrella Lec ture, was well received, although he would have done botter with a little more pro. paration. About a dozen of the school children sang "Try, try again," and being recalled responded with "Lot us march in good order," marching and singing in a most praiseworthy manner. A comic read. ing by Mr. W. Vipond was ...

The Advertiser. PUBLISHED EVERY TUESDAY, TIULSDAY AND SATURDAY lo0RNxeO. Bairnsdale, Tuesday, May 0, 1882. TAKING all duo precautions to prevent thle pollution - of the Mitchell River should, we imagine, be one of the first cares of our municipal rcpresentatives, in, their dual capacity of shire council lors and members of the local board of health. It was therefore with consider able surprise that we viewed, not only tie apathy with which Councillor Dre vermann's motion on this subject was received at the last council meeting,. but tile opposition it immediately provoked. The action of the recently elected metm ber for the central riding was harmless in the extreme. He simply and inno cently proposed-and he was doing so at tile special request of a number of his constituents--that the inspector of nui sances should be instructed to take spe cial precautions to prevent tile pollutiona of the Mlitchell River. This, however, was too simple a method of procedure to satisfy our civic Ba...
