Tlie following is an extract from-a letter on the sugar bounties by Mr J. £, Davidson, Mackay :-" What then is the cause of this unprecedented low price of sugar Î Can other semi- tropical countries with advantages of abundant and cheap labor produce it for less?' 1 unhesitatingly % say that other ciroumstances being equal, Queensland and Fiji can produce sugar cane as cheaply as it can be produced in any tropical country, while our methods of manufacture are apparently in advance of most countries, seeing that our best factories can produce a ton (2240lbs) of crude sugar :frott¿jess than 7 tons bf cane. In other words, they get 15 per cent, ont of the 16 per 'cent, of sugar actually contained in the I cane, or nearly 94 per cent, ia obtained ont of a possible 1C¡0 per eent. .
