(No. 2.) THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL TO LORD JOHN RUSSELL GOVERNMENT HOUSE, Sydney, 18th October, 1853. [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian, Ipswich and General Advertiser — 26 August 1856

(No. 2.) The Governor-General to Loed Jons Rbsseix Government House, Sydney, 18th October, 1863. My Lord, — I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt nf your Lordship's Despatch, No. 23, dated 23rd M»y, 1 865, in which I am directed to state my opinion as to tlie expediency of separating the Moreton Bay District lrom JSew 6outh Wales. . 2. I h.ivo looked over the former correspondence with relation to the proposed scheme of .separation, by which it would appear that tlie expediency of such a step was first advocated by the inhabitants of the Northern Districts principally with a view of induc ing the- Government to sand a. snpply of convict labour to that part of the colony. It is true that this yas objected to by a portion of the population, but still it formed the main feature ip mostot the .jetiti^ns; and I am, therefore, I think, justified in expressing my belief that the large squatters were the persons whose interests were niost consulted in the matter. In the later petitio...

LOCAL AND DOMESTIC. [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian, Ipswich and General Advertiser — 26 August 1856

LOCAL AND DOMESTIC. Raing. — A match came off yesterday between Mr. George Thorn's horse, "Sir Harry," and Mr. Thompson's mare "Maid o' the Mist," which excited   much interest. It was for £26 aside, and the horses had been in training for a few weeks previous to the event. Shortly after noon, the race took place on   the Racecourse, when, at starting, "Sir. Harry" took the lead until he reached the Stand, where the mare headed him for about a hundred yards ; but he soon   regained his proper position, and came in a winner by half a distance. In the second heat the result was the same, the mare barely saving her distance by four or five lengths. Time occupied in running   the second heat— 3 minutes and 5 seconds ; course, 1½ miles. Upwards of two hundred equestrians witnessed the sport, a large portion of whom were of the fair sex. The betting was 6 to 1 against "Sir, Harry," and one gentleman, who, as it turned out, was a better j...

(Par Favour of the North Auttratian.) Drayton, 28th August, 1866. To Henry Buckley, Esq., M.P, Sir,— A most intemperate letter appeared in 4be~ Free JPrtut on Monday last ; it bears your signature, and requires notice at my hands. , ' You nave presumed to make a most unwarrantable use of my name, and bare even dared to accuse my respectable constituents of gross acts of dishonesty. I am not a. hireling, neither can I be called a tedemwrhiufer, but I conceive ft to be my imperative duty to attempt an explanation, when gentlemen am thus coarsely assailed by a man of your standing. SYDNEY. RESIGNATION OF THE MINISTRY. [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian, Ipswich and General Advertiser — 2 September 1856

SYDNEY. UEStaNATION OF THE MINISTRY. MAnjr of .our readers will reniomber that, on the re-oleetion of Mr. Holt as one of the representatives for tho Stanley Boroughs, we ventured to predict that the Donaldson Ministry would nut remain in office for a longer ttcrind than six mouths ; and we had good reasons for entertaining such an opinion. Our prediction has been fulfilled rather earlier than we expected. Oti Thursday, the 21st ultimo, Mr. Donaldson surprised the Legislative Assembly by announcing tbe intention of tho Ministry to resign ; aud they did resign at the very time when Mr. Thomas Holt was to have brought forward his budget; and it is still problematical whether lie could have expounded it. Mr, Donaldson gave of reasons for his resignation that the opposition benches were too strongly arrayed agninat hit government, and that the late divisions on tin dtibatuj respecting the Judges and the Government Departments' Committee, satisfied him that the Ministry could uo longer re...

THE NORTH AUSTRALIAN. fJ'SWlOn, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2. 1856. ? w Such of our readers as are in the habit of reading the Moreton Bay Courier cannot fail to have observed that of late the leading articles of that journal have displayed more than their usual quantum of arrogance and ignor ance ; and tuat upon matters more particu larly referring to the interior of the district it has put forward assertions and, advanced argumente that are peculiarly ridiculous ; while at the same fame the whole display a mendacity the indulgence in which has done incalculable injury to the community gene rally. .
