MELBOURNE. The Beach at Hobson's Bay has lately been improved by the erection of a pier opposite Lingham's Hotel, and another is about to be erected opposite Li ardet's. THE PRESS.-The Assistant Editor of the South Australian Chronicle, Mr. Bennett, is at present sojourning here, on his way to Portland Bay, with the view of starting a journal in that district. As nothing can tend more effecsually to promote the interests of this rising com munity, no doubt that this gentleman will receive the fullest patronage and support. SERIOUS ACCIDENT. - Intelligence reached town on Monday morning, that F. A. Powlett, Esq., commissioner of Crown lands, for the Western Port dis trict, had met with a serious accident on the previous day, his arm and collar bone having been broken by a fall from his horse. Yet, though ex tremely cruel, he observed in his severities a species oft jnstice, of wlhich the following anecdote may be takeneas an illustration : A certain rich abbot,, who had the care of his dogs, having suffi-red two of them to get the mange, was heavily fined for his negligence. SYDNEY The old gaol in George.street has been abandoned, the prisoners having been removed to Darlinghurst. A Deposit and Loan Society, on a new principle, has commenced opera tions in Sydney. Its object is to grant loans of from twenty to fifty poundd, at an interest of fifteen per cent, to small tradesmen ; the loan to be repaid in weekly instalments of sixpence in the pound per week.. The military in New South Wales are to receive an increase of pay. Onue of the Episcopalian clergymen lately ordaineid at Sydney is a native of the coldny.
