TRANSVAAL TROUBLES. LONDON, January 9. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 18 January 1896

TRANSVAAL TROUBLES. London, January 9. The leading newspapers, both of London and the Provinces, in writing concerning the recent comments ©f the European press in respect to the dis pute with the South African Republic," recognise tbe menacing tone adopted and the apparently concerted action of tbe European Powers to secure the isolation of Great Britain. All party feeling is sunk in the face of the an tagonism thus displayed, and the newspapers referred to advise Lord Salisbury to at once take action to in crease the armaments of Great Britain both on land and sea. It is time, they affirm, that it was made clear to the whole world that England will not quietly submit to be bullied either 'by any sijjgle Power or by all in com bination. .The loss on Dr. Jameson's side at the fight at Krugersdrop was 180 killed and 37 wounded., The battle w;aged for 36 .Jaours, till Dr. ■ Jaineson's lasi cartridge was expended.. j To the last lx> e\pected to be reinforced 1 bv n L li list 2,000 U...

THE HOTEL QUESTION. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 18 January 1896

THE HOTEL QUESTION. Now that a scheme is being formu lated for the establishment of a licensed house 111 Hen mark it is neces sary that unanimity on the question should be maintained. The first business is to get the majority of the inhabitants of the settlement to agree to the outlines of the proposed scheme. If it is at once granted that the sale of liquor uuder supsmsion will be infinitely better than the present illicit trade, which surely every reasonable person will grant, then there should be no difficulty m getting a majority cf settlers to sign the petition. The suggested Trust to take over all sur plus profits and devote thein to local public works as may be decided upon, is certainly the best method of dealing with them. But the question of s: company having the management of the business requires more considera tion. It is contended by a corre spondent in another column that a company may open the way for abuses. For instance five capitalists might buy up all the shares ...

WOMEN GET ABOUT WHAT THEY WANT NOWADAYS. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 18 January 1896

WOMEN GET ABOUT WHAT THEY WANT NOWADAYS. Of course there was a time—and not so very long ago—when men were tyrants and kept women under, Now adays the only thing denied them in polite circles is to whisk around by themselves after dark, and plenty of them do that. The law isgiving them, with both hands, almost everything they ask for, nearly as rapidly as exist ing inequalities are pointed out, and the right of suffrage is withheld from them only because the majority of women are still averse to exercising it. , Man, the tyrant and highway man, has thrown up his arms and is allow ing women to pick his pockets. He is not willing to have her bore a hole in ' his upper lip, and drag him behind her with a rope, but he is disposed to consent to any reasonable legislative changes- which she desires to have made, short of those which would in volve masculine disfigurement nf dun. i« Nation.—i Scribners Mayizcne.
