Young. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Homestead Selections. — Six selec tors applied for some 2000 acres of homestead selections on Thursday last, mostly on Memagong holding. This form of tenure appears to be popular in nne district. The Weather. — Frosts are keeping off ; the days are fairly warm and heavy dews at night, giving all vegeta tion a splendid chance of growth. The Lambing.— It is rather early to get an idea of general percentages, but the prospects are not too bright anywhere. Ploughing. — The rain at the be ginning of the month went wrell into the ground, and the ploughs are now making very satisfactory progress. May i 9th, 1896. More Scandal at the Central Meat Market. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 22 May 1896

More Scandal at the Central Meat Market. A paragraph under this heading recently appeared in the London ' Meat Trades' Journal ' as follows : — 'Some time ago we called atten tion to certain irregularities and illicit trading carried nn at the Central Meat Marker, wit.h the knowledge of the f^rkmr. «*« tim'c! \Tarlrpf, Onmrmf.f f-p The result of legal proceedings, which were instituted against a firm of sales men -.:ccup)'ing a prominent position in the market on a weekly tenancy, was that the firm paid £7000 rather than face a trial, and also met all the heavy legal expenses which had heen incurred by the plaintiffs. After this case was settled another was brought against the same firm of salesmen. The usual legal delays occurred, the defendants paying the expenses all the time ; but this case lias also been withdrawn from the lists, and we understand that the defendants have paid £3000 in settlement, in addition to the costs. Still, the firm are allowed by. the Corporation's Marke...

One Touch of Nature Makes the Whole World Kin. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 22 May 1896

One Touch of Nature Makes the Whole World Kin. Some nights ago in Kansas City I heard a characteristic, yet pathetic, story of the old days when John Hope was showing some of his Canadian wonders at the fab stock show. It was down in the old Exposition Build ing. The battle had been fought, the victory had been won, and Clarence Kirklevington was to be led to the slaughter. Ihe herdsman was stand ing behind his charge with the prize ribbons all over the stall. It was a moment to be happy, but all at once the great steer turned his head towards his keeper, and gave one great wail, half in anger and half in astonishment, for it was his feeding time. My informant said, ' Sandy, what's wrong with Clarence?' 'Man,' he said, ' Mr. Hope tell't me no to feed him as he's to be killed the nicht.' Then he turned away and wept like a child. And all the crowd felt like doing the same. The triumph of the show-ring was nowhere in comparison to the death of his pec that had been reared under the ta...

Control of Sex. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 22 May 1896

Control of Sex. Many of the recorded facts in breed ing seem to indicate that the control of sex largely depends upon ' nick,' and that while a particular mating may cause the throwing of offspring almost entirely of one sex, the same animals differently mated may produce Drosrenv almost entirely of the other. Jersey breeders earnestly long for heifers and bull calves are regarded as a misfortune, since the excellence of the breed for the dairy constitutes its value. One of the greatest bulls of the breed, Signal 1170, was killed be cause he threw so large a proportion of bull calves, and yet a good many Jersey breeders are of the opinion that if he could have been more widely employed on a greater range of females the results might have been different and his very valuable blood saved to the breed. Mr. D. D. Bishop, the well-known Jersey breeder, of Con necticut, takes this view ; and in a recent issue of the ' Jersey Bulletin ' gives some experience of his own tend ing to prove it...

Ensilage and Hay. TO THE EDITOR "S. S. AND S. JOURNAL." [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 22 May 1896

Ensilage and Hay. TO THE EDITOR ' S. S. AND S. JOURNAL.' Sir, — We have good seasons in thia country, when the grass is high above the fences and we haven't stock enough to feed it down. Then the wind comes, dries the gra6S and blows it away with the roley-poleys, and soon our stock dies tor want or reed. That is the old-time fashion. Now my place, ' Good Hope,' contains 983 acres ; of this some 200 acres are river flats, the balance fair grazing land. I keep in a paddock of 710 acres gener ally a couple of thousand sheep. The balance of the estate is used for fattening cattle and horses. The winter before last I had 2643 sheep on the place, over 100 head of cattle, and some 20 horses. Last winter, after I finished lambing, I had 2910 sheep, lambs and all, 27 head of cattle and some 20 horses. As all my sheep were in the 710 acre paddock my returns from it was 8s 4d per acre for wool and a lamb to the acre besides. My gross returns from the whole place for the year was £748. I know ...
