Latest English Telegrams ? London. Thursday. In the match Australia v. Surrey the latter have 5 out for 85, Bird 48 batting. The South Africans have three out for 26 against Yorkshire. Tbe third officer of the steamer California- states that he was certain. the lights of the ship he saw were those of the Titanic. He woke the wireless operator who listened for some seconds but heard nothing. The Court was thrilled to hear that the messages of distress were ''missed by only a few seconds. The crowd in a Californian city expelled a socialist woman lecturer aud tarred and feathered her mana ger. Sir George Eeid, during his address in Berlin, expressed the hope that Germany's future greatness as well as Australia's would lie along the path of peace. He added that an Anglo-German coalition based on peace would be a good thing for the whole world.

Mr. Murray will resign the Prem iership to-morrow, but will remain in the Cabinet as Chief Secretary and Minister for Labor. Mr. Watt will be sworn in as Premier. General Baden-Powell, speaking at the Town Hall last night, severely condemned the loafers, iu which cat egory* he included people of leisure who frivol away their lives equally as much as the tramp who refuses to work. The Labor Council has decided to urge the Government to amend the Navigation Act with a view of secur ing the maximum of safety. It is expected that N.S.W. will receive 40,000 immigrants during the present year. ^ The appeal in the Vend prosecu tions will be heard on July 29th. Of the assessed Federal Land Tax; amounting to £1,359,615, only £54,713 has been received to date.
