The German Emperor's Visit to Jerusalem. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 10 December 1897

The German Emperor's Visit to Jerusalem. The intended visit of the Emperor William to Palestine serves to recall the fact that he will be the second German Emporer to have set foot in Jerusalem. The first German Emperor to enter that city was Frederick II., who undertook a Crusade to the Holy Land, but who entered into a treaty at ALcalon with the Caliph Kiamil of Egypt, whereby Jerusalem and some territory on the coast were ceded to him. Thereupon Frederick II. made a triumphal entry into Jerusalem, where he was crowned King by the Latin Patriarch. Later on the title of King of Jerusalem was trans ferred with the Crown of the German Empire to the Hapsburgs, and the present Emperor Francis Joseph of Austria has been the only Hapsburg Emperor and titular King of Jeru salem who has visited that city. This occurred in 1869. Germany has, however, been repre sented in Jerusalem since the time of Charles the Great, who appointed a Consul there, the first instance of a Commercial Consul kn...

The Outlook in Austria. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 10 December 1897

Tlje Outlook in Austria. It has long been apparent that anti-Semitism, in Austria is a very different thing from anti Semitism in Russia and Roumania. The latter countries are, so for as their internal politics are concerned, in a state of comparative im mobility; and in them anti-Semitism is the settled policy of an unchanging Government. But in Austria political parties are active, and the system of which they form part is in a state of unstable equilibrium ; indeed there is, from the Jewish point of view, only one con stant element of importance in the situation viz., the friendliness of the Emperor. This special character of Austrian anti-Semitism is accentuated by the political events of the week, the duel between Count Bodeni and Her Wolf. In the first place such a duel is a monstrous anomaly in a constitutionally governed country roost striking of many signs that for the time Jbeing Austrian politicians have thrown off the restraint, without which Constitutional Govern ment c...

"Who is Rich?" [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 10 December 1897

'Who is Rich?' BY RABBI G. TAUBENHAUS. To be is one thing and to seem another. .The eye is no competent guide. Though we 'enjoy its images immensely and can ill afford to keep the shutters always closed upon it, we cannot fail to go astray if we place too much ?confidence in the guidance of the whimsical sovereign of our senses, that misrepresents, magnifies and minimises things. Nowhere, perhaps, are the consequences of ?the government of the eye so serious as in the question of riches. Gold ! ' Gold ' is the Cry of people. ' Gold makes rich.' And what crimes are committed, and what miseries ..are endured in the name and pursuit of gold ? Ben Zoma says : ' Bich is he, who is pleased with his portion.' Accumulation does not make the rich man. The miser accumulates, i and no sensible person will call him rich. His I accumulation is his misfortune in making his | iife a long stretch of tortures, a wilderness of I fears, a lasting nightmare. [ To be rich means to enjoy and to use | pro...

Zionist Movement. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 10 December 1897

Zionist Movement. The following is an extract irom a sermon delivered at the Birmingham Synogogue, by the Rev. G. J. Emanuel, B.A. on the above movement : — ^Palestine is not now an ideal home for the thousands of Jews who huddle in its sacred cities in poverty and beggary, but if it were made into an Armenia, they know there might be other Armenian atrocities of which they would be the victims. The time iur xttjaouiauiuu is iiuo uuw 3 out lauu 1a uuu ready for us ; we are not ready for the land. The Congress was altogether abortive as far as its real purpose was concerned. Yet none need regret that it was held. It is a great fact full of promise that Jews have met together from all parts of the world. They will meet again and again to discuss practical not theoretical questions, to aim at possible, not impossible objects. Meanwhile, let us for ourselves consider the subject of Israel's future. We are not all agreed as to our belief and as to our hope. There are two great schools of...

'What is Retarding the Social Progress of the Community ? This question is suggested by the remarkable inanition of Jewish Social Life in Australia. Every secular community approaching ours in numbers appears to enjoy a much- greater measure of social success. Victories at the schools, in music, the profes sions, and the veneer of social life 'have been ours often enough. We have well tried and worthy men and women exempniying tneir skill in medicine, and assisting in the advance of its attendant studies : our kinsmen adjudicate in the highest legal tribunals, and the many young men of promise entered as solicitors and barristers — likewise our successful lady barrister of New Zealand— are sure to be heard of with distinction in the future .'in politics we are represented in every rank and responsi bility. But, these things are the mere vanities. They are the mile posts in the race for fame. The end of living, or the ultimate good, which is to be sought for its own sake, according t...

Like all good things the post card is frequently turned to wrongful uses. 'We refer to dunning. A man will often pay a few shillings more than he owe3 rather than his servants shall see postcards demanding pay ment. If a man is in business his credit suffers ; and if he is not in business, the report that he is being dunned for a small debt may injure him socially. Or if a debt is due, and the debtor will not pay, the remedy of tjie creditor is by legal process, not by annoyance In law, as in morals, the end does not justify the means, and the only proper way of enforcing a lawful claim is by due proces of law. The following is from the Melbourne ' Standard ' of Saturday last : HELPLESS VICTORIA!— APPEALING FOR FUNDS. Another Bad Advertisement. Some of our begging bishops have given Australia — nay Victoria — a very bad advertisement. Here from the 'Jewish Chronicle ' (London) is another : — THE MELBOURNE CONGREGATION — AN EARNEST APPEAL. Sir, — It is with profound regret I have been urged to appeal to the members of the Jewish -community on behalf of the Bourke street Melbourne Hebrew congre gation, Victoria. Australia, for aid towards saving that venerable institution from passing out of the hands of the congregation through misfortune over which they have no control, for want of means to liquidate a mortgage debt that has accrued, and that they are unable to meet, and have failed in their most strenuous efforts to obtain funds so satisfy the claims which now amount to £7500. It is pretty generally known that for some years past the colony has suffered a financial crisis that no British ...

A Seasonable Word to Children. WHY SHALL I GO TO SABBATH SCHOOL? [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 10 December 1897

A Seasonable Word to Children. WHY SHALL I GO TO SABBATH SCHOOL? The above question is asked quite frequently Tby children. And why ? Because apparently many parents do not take the proper interest in their children's spiritual or religious welfare. Why shall I go to Sabbath- school is a question which should be answered in our homes, it should be inculcated in the minds of the young that in the Sabbath-schools, we are taught to, know God, to become familiar with the Father of all, to learn that He, and He alone is the Creator of the earth, and all that dwell thereon. There we are taught of His wisdom, His goodness, and of His love. In the Sabbath school we learn the early history of mankind ; there we are introduced to the grand old patri archs, and learn the lessons of piety, faith, endurance and heroism. In the Sabbath-school we are made acquainted with the Bible, the Book of Books. We come to know and rever ence the men and women who portrayed ?examples of nobleness, fortitude a...
