May it Half-Caste Buy Liquor ! [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Tweed Advertiser — 6 March 1903

May a lEalf-Cnstc Buy Liqnor! A cask of considerable importance to publicans and the public generally was heard atrthe Police Court., Tilba Tilba, on Saturday, before the P.M., Air. H. F. Koberts, and Messrs. I'! Carter and B.. M. Bates Js.P., when the police proceeded against Frank Sceats, licensee of the Palace Hotel for supplying liquor to William Bond, an aboriginal. After lengthy evi dence, tending to prove that Bond's father was a full-blooded aboriginal, and his mother a half-caste, the Bench, by majority (Mr. Bale dissenting), dismissed the case. The P.M., in giv ing the decision, said that he sincerely hoped publicans would not take ad vantage of it. It is needless to im press the holders of licenses with the awful consequences of supplying drink even to half-castes. The majority of tho Bench thought that it was doubt ful whether defendant, was liable for supplying to a half-caste, and defend ant, no matter -how infinitesimal or shadowy the doubt, should get the benefit, if...

Danger of Feeding Sorghum. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Tweed Advertiser — 6 March 1903

Iftmiger of Feeding Sorghum, SoiicmuM lias long had a bad repu tation as being liable, for no known reason, to kill the animals feeding on it, and this lias been especially true of the second growth. Tlio theories that, have been brought forward lo ac count for tlie trouble are numerous but when investigated they do not explain the cause, of death, but it seems as if the Nebraska Station had at last, found tlie trouble. Ait the result of their work they conclude : ? 1. That, there is no foundation for tlio theory 'that animals choke to death. 2. There is no foundation for the theory that animals die from indiges tion. 3. Animals die from the effect of a poison which hns been elaborated in sorghum of a stunted growth. 4. The symptoms are of prussic acid. As the symptoms pointed to prussic acid, the chemist hunted for that body and found it, and thus seems to have discovered a sufficient cause for the sudden death which so frequently fol . lows pasturing oil second growth sorghum, for...
