JAPANESE VIEW OF WOMEN'S RIGHTS. [Newspaper Article] — Western Star and Roma Advertiser — 30 October 1875

JAPANESE VIEW OF WOMEN'S EIGHTS. A file of Japanese newspapers—that is news papers written by the Japanese thamselves—«ai hardly fail to afford reajSiag of a novel kind, iani .full of amusement, if only.trom the opportunity of comparing Japanese ideas with our own on subjects of interest common to them and to us. In a late number of the Japan Mail we' see by the -transla tions of several articles from the native press,' there lias been an active discussion going forward iia last subject we .should have expected iu Japan— " Woman's Ri^hte." One writer, referring'to-a previous theBis of Messrs. Mori and Tnkuzav. a. who maintained the equalrightsof husband and wife, says,—If we look into the theories of Europeans on this subject, it would appear that the possession of equal power By husband and wife is based on natural reason. But if we observe the practice of .Europeans, it would appear that the power ..of tjig. wife is greater than that of the the husband, "and that this error has be...

RUSSIAN PROGRESS IN ASIA. (From the Times, August 23.) [Newspaper Article] — Western Star and Roma Advertiser — 6 November 1875

RUSSIA# PROGRESS IN ASIA. (From the Times, August 23.) The expedition to Merv is a very serious matter. When she took lOiiva it was pre dicted that she was deliberately ma-Wing a step towards Merv, and thus to our Indian Empire. She soon found the usual excuses or necessities for advancing beyond her K.hi van outposts in-the agressions <if the neigh bouring tribes. The Tekhehs had come into collision with one of the invading ccl imi« before the capture of Khiva, and they kept up iheir enmity after it was taken. The enemies of Bussia say that her troops deli berately provoked a quarrel with those tribes because it was convenient for her to gain the mastery over people who held Merv. The Russians themselves contend that they were innocent of anything worse than self-defence, and that the Tekhehs attacked their outposts with the reckless fury of barbarians. It would be a fruit less task -to enquire which of the reports is true, or whether there may not be truth in both, for ...

WAR WITH CHINA. [Newspaper Article] — Western Star and Roma Advertiser — 6 November 1875

WAR WITH CHINA. The Examiner considers " it is time surely to arouse ourselves/ lest a new war with China come upon xtg, as usual when we are totally unprepared, and ignominious defeat be needed, also , as usual, to wake us then from our treacherous sleep.
