HTIAT A DAUB"OF INK DID. IA certain newspaper proprietor had a way of appearing in the com posing and press rooms at the most a.lexpected times, and as his visits often resulted in a general " shake , uo" of the working forces of the pa per, they were awaited with fear and trembling by the employes. One time one of the pressmen, an excel lent workman, Who had been there many years, but was Sometimes guil Ly of a lapse of sobriety, had a black eye, and was in a quandary as to what excuse he should offer if the proprietor should notice it. .By a sudden inspiration he seized an ink roller and daubed some ink on his face, quite covering the discoloura eion. Presently the governor came In, and, with the foreman, went through the room, commenting on every detail, and looking very sharp ly at every workman. When about to leave he suddenly pointed to the Inky pressman and said :." What is that man's namn ?" The man qlak ed in his shoes. until he continued, slowly : "I wans you to give that ...

THE PROFESSOR'S CHICKE·NS. This may not be true, but it was new to our reporter, who overheard it whilst riding on a tram car, so it is likely there are others who have heard it. " I heard a good one on Professor --, of the:University." he said. " W\hat was it ? " qucried the other.. " Well, you knowv he was married auring the winter, and. went to house keeping just outside the city. :Last spring hlie thought he would add a few hens to his s'ockl, he already had a dog. lie :sil a couple of hens, and in time had t o large broods of chic hens. Hlie :as very ptoud of them, but in a week or so the chickens began to die. IHe called in a neigh bou, to look at the chickens, and offeradvice. 'They were certainly a pretty scaly lot of :chickens that Ihe neighbour viewied.: They were skin ny-looking, and apparently without ambition. " What did yer feed them on?? " asked the neighbour, after a brief survey. . " Feed them," responded the pro fessor, as though he didn't hear aright: " why I don'...

BULL KILLED BY A NEEDLE. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 10 February 1917

SBULL KILLED BY A NEEDLE. rr. Gee..W inkley; of West ,aitland writes in the "Agricultural Gazette oi N.S.W." :-"I take the liberty ol bringing undei· notice the death of a valuable .Durham bull, about 2½year, old. The animal died suddenly with out the sign of a struggle, and as it appeared to have .been' in excellent health, I decided to have it opened and examined in the presence of the local Stock .Inspector. This was done with the result that the bull was found to have been perfectly free from any disease, and all .the organs in a normal condition until we came to the heart, in which was discovered a packing-needle about 4 inches in length It appeared to have been in the posi tion as found for many months, as it was firmly imbedded in a core or crusnt. The point of the needle had penetrated the wall of one of the blood-vessels, and had caused a point prick in the opposite wall. In the blood-vessel, the blood had the ap pearance of having been .congealed before death."

BOWLS. IVANHOE RECREATION ASSO CIATION. Notes by " Sir Francis." I regret to have to chronicle another defeat of thle A pennant team last Saturday on the Ivanhoe green at the liands of the Northcote Club. Ivanhoe were down 34 points at the finish. I don't suppose any member o.:bf the team thought they would lie. able to overcome their near niighbors. The match was very late in starting, but the home team waited patiently till nearly half an-hour after the proper time of commencing. Girling, the North cote captain, who appeared in khaki, quite overwhelmed Barstow's rink, .though it is proper to note the Ivanihoe skipper only had three men to his-oppolient's-four; Fred Plant (Northcote) ;vas opposed by F, Bryant.
