COURSBNG. Owners of greyhounds are reminded (hat nominations for iho opening meeting of the Birchip Coursing Club, to bo held on May 6, close with the secretary on Saturday, May 2. As the first 16 dogs in each stake is taken, and as a number of entries hare already been received,. owners should forward nominations without delay. The Birchip Coursing Club will have a plontiful supply of hares for tho present season, no less than 40 of tho fleet-footed animals having been turned loose in the plampton during the last eight days. A Timely Downpour. 115 POINTS AT BIRCHIP. Tho long-looked for break in the weather eventuated on Monday evening, wlion a steady, soaking rain commenced to fall. Tho rain con tinued throughout tho night, and did uoi cease uutil about 430 on Tuesday morning. The poiats registered amount to 115, and as the rain was I of a steady; soaking character, it will do an inestimable amount of good to the district generally, which was badly in need of such a downpour, id order to keep the young grass grow ing, -which sprang into lifo aftor tho rocent storm. The fall will also start tho grass all over tho district, and should be iho means of creating a good growth of -winter food, which is so badly needed at present. The Arabian National Stud Book, Vol. 1. lias been published in Amer ica, and Sir Walter Gil'bey has writ ten the preface, in -which he states (hat up to the present time more than •1000 distinct works, in various,lan guages, have been devoted to the horse, and among these are nearly ninety in Arabic and Persian, which are specially devoted to the Aral) breed. The history of the horse shows that there have been two distinct types in Britain since the time of Julius Caesar. This breed of horse was the anxious care of Parliament from a date prior to the time of King John; and it is noted that the weight a riding horse of this type had to hear, with its mail-clad rider and the plate armor with which it was protected, might he upwards of 4ewU or 32 stone.
