PUBLICOLA, THIRD SERIES, No. XXXII. To the Editor of the Standard. [Newspaper Article] — South Bourke Standard — 3 January 1862

PUBPLICOLA, T4?u~i saxn e, No. xxxtI. Tb the .Editor of the Statnard, Sts,--t had meant my last ltter to have concluded ply third series. Before doing so, justice to myself and others who have expressed a favourable opinion' of my efforts, requires a few more words before con cluding it. My constant endeavour during my cor respondencu-'in'.your journal has been coisietency and Clearness in expression. It appears, by the openly expressed opinion of some, that according to their views I have not been so suCcessful as I hoped, and that, consequently, I have exposed myself on thelr jart to charges of inconsIstency and folly in my expressed opinions, partioularly as regards the na ture and power of circumstances. They who blame and censure others for inconsis tency, and charge them with folly, ought to be wise and consistent themselves; and when they assert that man is body and soul the entire creature of cir cumitances, and, as a necessary result, state that he is neither an accountable...

A LION LOOSE IN HAMBURG. [Newspaper Article] — South Bourke Standard — 3 January 1862

A LIow Loose IN H?lAnoao.-A letter says:-. "Yesterday HIamburg, or :part of it at least, was thrown intogreat commotion by a very unusual occur rence. A lion which was being transported in a wooden cage from a travelling menagerie to the water side, managed to break loose and get out of his gem porary prison.- The ferocious brute immediatoly fell upon one of the three horses attached to the carriage. The driver, who was upon one of the others, sat still in blank amazement at the sight, which was declared by many spectators-who, by the bye, were all out of harm's way-among the finest they had ever wit nessed, In a moment the driver of the second me nagerloe waggon, who happened to be just behind, came up, and calling out for a rope, which was fortu nately at liand, approached the lion, and with great nerve and coolness fastened it round his throat. The infuriated beast; who was already feasting upon his fallen victim, disdainedto t akoeany notice of the daring act. 'In a trice the st...

TO MESSRS. SMITH AND O'GRADY, M.L.A.s. [Newspaper Article] — South Bourke Standard — 3 January 1862

TO MESSES. SMITH AND O'GRADFY, M.LA.sL s GENTLEMEN,-0Yur attentioni wil be ar-' rested in Parliamnntbhy a deficient revenue and upon this Assembly devolves the grave responsibility of restoring the colony from the prostrate condition caused by the Heales Government senility. Party and personality must be sunk, The credit of the colony is. at stake, and the revenue must be equalised. Ne.Z taxes hardly seem the true policy of a pinched community - retrenchment must;. cause great distress to many. Nowv, I ask your attention to an old Roman enactment, which in this thinly peoplod and new lalnd,. surely will easily and happily become us. Many tens of thousands of males are unmar ried-thousands crowding our diggings in the condition of celibacy. As "people" are the true wealth of a country, I want you to test' your skill in introducing the notion of taxing. all bachelors, say, of the ago of 23, ]oomeui punished and taxed bachelors, and rewarded married men. Napoleon considered her the. mo...
