ALEXANDRA ROAD- BOARD; January 14tb, 1869. Present : Mr. Petersin, (Chairman). Messrs Pendlebury, Coster, Perkins, and   Webster. The minutes of last meeting were read. Mr Coster objected to them being con- firmed in their present shape, as the divis- ion list was not shown. It was no doubt convenient for some members not to have their votes recorded, as they could thereby back out of any motion that proved to be unpopular. The minutes were altered and confirmed. l1rtre htlnulthre. --+---- (To the Editor of the Aleandara d fimws) Sta,-The earthquakes which occurred some short .time back at the Sandwich Islands 'and kmerica, induce me to forward -to you these lines explanatory of the cause of those convulsions of nature, and I trust it will be acceptable to your readers. Earthquakes are occasioned by the com bined action of earth, fire, air, and water Air, which makes its way down to a cer tain depth under the earth "through minute apertures, or water, which insinuates -itself through the fissures of the same when they reach at a point where they meet large quantities of inflammable matter such as bitumens, pyrites, - &c., those substances instantly 'bhange their appearances which for ages before have been dormant. They now conceive new apparent qualities, they become hot, produce new air, which con. sequently requires room for expansion. The narrow apertures by which the air or water obtained access are now closed up, New air is cont...

PUBr.IsIII)D rVr.IIY Mo'IDAY AND TrIUlRgDAY MunORINi "" Verrnta Vinclt Osniula." SATURDAY, JANUARY 30, 1869. IT is somnwhat singular that some persons will insist on quarrelling with their own bread and butter, and any attempt to do them good service is looked upon with sus picion and distrust: We have a singular instance of this in the recent action taken by the people of Jamieson and Gaffney's Creek in the movement lately made for including the scattered population around these districts within the Alexandra Road District for the purpose of gerring a bridge over the Goal burn, about theo junction of the Howqua. To the inhabitants of Tamieson, Gaffney's and Wood's Pint a good road up the valley of the Goulburu is of the greatest importance, as it will he a saving of not only fifty miles in the distnnce to Melbourne, but a much better road and at the same time will he the means of bringing into the mountain ranges all the products of the firm at a much cheaper rate than they could o...

GODFREY'S CREEK. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 30 January 1869

GODFREY'S CREEK. (FRoM OUR OwN CORRESPONIZ BNT.) :An amateur vocal and dramatic enter tainment was given, on Wednesday last,. at Roberts's Godfrey's Creek Hotel, in aid of the school building fund. The room was, notwithstanding the heavy rain and the general uncomfortableness of the weather, crowded, and shows the interest the inhabi tants take in the education of the voting among them, who have hitherto been without instruc(ion. The pertormunce commenced with a Negro medley of songs, jokes and local hits, in which Mlessrs De'Lacy, Walley, and Francis took Ipart whose eftorts were fully appreciated. After this a number of songs followed, and great praise is due to Miss Coyle, a young lady of ten years of age whose singing was excellent, and with care ful training she will doubtless become an excellent singer. The stump speech of Mr S O'Dell.. fairly convulsed the house with latughter, the local allusions being excellent. the farce of the " Portrait Gallery" brought a very pleasant a...

Long, long &go. when earth was young, - And Adanam lept on beds of roses ; When Tubal Cain the hammer swung .To forge those tools which break men's noses* When Comus lived.and beauty's reign Was all supreme upon the enrth, And mighty Angels too could deign To condescend to join the mirth; Nay. more, would e'en their heaven forego, And take earth's daughters unto wife.
