Tut: protracted strike of 30,000 cotton operatives in tho State of Massachusetts has been terminated by mutual conces sions on the part of tho employees and operatives. Tho direct losses owing to the' cessation of work have totalled £1,000,000. Tho Russian statement, submitted a-b the Dogger Bank Commission alleges that thu Bnlticilceb fired on two torpedo boats. When the fishing vessels were noticed tho flagship signalled an order to protect them, but tho imperious duty of protecting the battleships rendered it necessary to continue tiring. Shortly afterwards tho torpedo boats withdrew and disappeared. Admiral Rozhdcst vonsky explained that he felt it to be ab solutely necessary to continue his jour ney, and under tho circumstances he was both entitled audbound to act as he did. Both Had a Private Bottle. ' I siaykd for a night lately,' writes a bushman, ''at a Queensland; , back station. There were only two 'men on the place, the manager ami the store keeper — both of them hnrd cases. Ah wo yarned during the evening, the storekeeper went outside. Then the manager took me mysteriously to his room, produced a bottle of whisky, and invited me to have u nip. 'Don't let him know about it,' he said, referring to the storekeeper; 'his tongue, hns been hanging out for it these ten days.' After tea, the manager had to be away for some little time, -when the store keeper, with the same mysteiy, pro duced his private bottle, and invited me to try some. ' Don't let on to the boss,' he remarked ; he's been just panting for a drink for a month past.' I left them both happy in their ig norance.'
