Behrend receives $850,000 gift from Clark family [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 21 January 1999

Behrend receives $850,000 gift from Clark family by Shannon Weber News Editor Due to a generous endowment of $850,000 made by the Clark family, their children are now eligible for scholarships at Behrend. This major endowment was set up for this purpose. In 1997 the Clark family had established a $100,000 scholarship to provide young people the chance for an education. The Clark family is the owner of Snap-tite, Inc. "It's very important to us to reach out to the young people of this region," said George Clark, Snap-tite, Inc. chairman, president, and CEO. "Many of the young adults in this area would not have a chance to go to college unless someone gave them some help. Our hope is that this gift will make a difference in many people's lives." Snap-tite, Inc. looks at this not as a contribution but as an investment into the community. "We know that by investing in this young people, the community will benefit in the long run. That the way we feel about it," noted Gary Clark,...

BEHREND OPEN HOUSE SERIES CONTINUES. Scientists and artists alike will be fascinated when the 1998-99 Open House Nights in Astronomy/Science Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, continues Thursday, January 28 at 7:30 p.m. with a colorful and aesthetically pleasing presentation of the patterns formed by cellular automata (CA). Ronald McCarty, instructor in computer science and coordinator of Computer Science at Penn State Behrend, will present the program. Cellular automata (CA) are dynamic systems composed of cells interacting according to a set of rules. Each cell interacts only with cells in its immediate neighborhood, yet when studied, surprisingly beautiful patters of complex behavior often emerge. Among many cither uses, CAs can be employed by ecologists lo model the behavior of forest fires, by engineers to study the flow of air around wings, by meteorologists to simulate the development of weather patterns, and by hobbyists just for the fun of it. McCarty ...

Where's the support? [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 21 January 1999

Where's the support? A view from the lighthouse Pack the Gym Night was held last Saturday to increase support of the men's and women's basketball teams on campus. Free tickets, valued at three dollars a piece, were distributed in the mailboxes in the attempt to persuade students to attend the event. But did a lot of students attend the event? No. Pack the Gym Night was hardly an appropriate name for the affair. "Easy to Get a Seat Night" would have been a more suitable name. What does this say about Behrend's spirit and support towards athletic teams? There is none. The student body's support of athletic teams plays an integral role in a team's success as a whole. The reason for this is that the more encouragement a team receives, the more motivated they are, and the more likely they will be victorious—both spiritually and physically. Considering the absence of support and attendance at the event, both the men s and women s basketball teams are to be congratulated for st...
