JSflrit-ilh-rf [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and American Stockman — 21 February 1885

JSflrit-ilh-rf Agriculture ln Arkansas . . . x EDITOBS WESTEBN : BUBAL : — Theoretical forming and practical fanning Is quite a different thing , for very of ten the theory and the results of its application are widely different . AB the . immortal bard so sagely wrote : Tie easier tb teach twenty : what it were well to do than to be one of the twenty to follow your own teaching . The one crop idea has been fought against by practical and theoretical men alike , until in many portions of the country the farmers have adopted the plan of diversified farming , and are finding it greatly to their advantage ; but in Arkansas only a small proportion of the farmers are able to read , and those are more interested in cotton reports than aught else , hence , the wheel of progress ia , and has been for many years , running in the one deep groove . Its tire , its spokes , its hub , are clogged with cotton , and although the movement is not entirely stopped , it is seriously impeded . A man com...

|| orticttHttral [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and American Stockman — 21 February 1885

|| orticttHttral Sugar and Bice . The South has faUed to reach the possibilities of development because its systems have not been upon a broad scale . Of late years it has been extending and multiplying its enterprises to some extent , but there is great room for it to do more in that direction . Unquestionably the South offers a flne field for enterprise , espeoiaUy of an agricultural character , if its resources are properly utilized . A New Orleans correspondent believes that the South has devoted too exclusive attention to sugar production . He writes THE WESTEBN RUBAL as follows : Many sugar plantations that ten years ago were yielding princely incomes are now expensive property to hold , requiring an income from outside sources tykeep them intact . Hope breathes a flattering tale each year , saying this year wiU be more abundant than last . While hugging this delusive phantom of hope , the lamentable fact of poor yields , and worse stiU , low prices , have left the planter wit...

ifjarticulhtral [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and American Stockman — 21 February 1885

ifjarticulhtral of the past will teach us how to improve our methods of propagation so as to enable our trees to withstand the peculiarities of our climate , we will have every reason to take courage . It is a weU-known fact the stem invariably suffers greater harm than any other part of the tree . From a few inches to three feet or more above the gro u n d there may be more or l ess ru ptu r es of the bark and of the sap cells of the cambium layer , ac c om p anied by a d ea d en i n g o f the heart-wood of the stem . If this injury extends all around the stem the tree must die . We have a few varieties not subject to this difficulty , and if these be used as stems for the loss hardy , the point we aim at is gained . Top or stem grading is not new . It has been in use for . generations , both in Europe and in this country . The success achieved by the early orchardists in producing productive and long lived trees far eclipses anything we can show , - especially here in the West . A...
