ltevlew of Feb I- _ BFSINESS CONDITIONS . uun s . 9 says : Severe storms restricted new business in many sections of the country . luring the past week and increased the delay In making deliveries on old orders . Low temperature and snow stimulated activity In seasonable lines -of merchandise at retail . but the Interruption to general trade was sufficient to retard distribution considerably . The additional traffic difficulty made freight movement most unsatisfactory , and in some cases the light receipts of fuel and foodstuffs caused hardship . Commodity prices advanced as a rule . Jobbers report a good demand for spring delivery , especially in dry goods . but business is retarded by slow shipments from the mills , and collections are only fair .- Manufacturing plants operate at full capacity In the leading Industries , although there are complaints of fuel scarcity . Real estate transactions and building permits promise much structural activity later in the season , sustaining p...

SOME COLD FACTS . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 16 February 1907

SOME COLD FACTS . In the county in which I live ( Lancaster county , Pa ., by about fifty percent the richest agricultural county in America ) we have thousands upon thousands of cows , from some of the best to many of the worst . We feed—fatten— probably 20 , 000 head of steers yearly . We sell thousands upon thousands of tons of hay , and thousands of bushels of potatoes . The tobacco crop of 1905 is said to have made 25 million pounds , bringing the farmers 2 % millions of dollars . Last year , it is estimated , the crop was nearly 35 million pounds , and worth 3 / j to 4 million dollars . We have one city of 40 , 000 inhabitants and a dozen and a half boroughs , from one with about 12 , 000 inhabitants down to many smaller ones . The Atglen and Susquehanna low grade , four track railroad , built in a bee-line across the county about 25 miles , scooped through hills and swung on bridges over valleys , has just been completed at a cost of nearly 20 millions of dollars . In the Sus...

ADVERTISING FOR THE FARMER . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 16 February 1907

ADVERTISING FOR THE FARMER . The educational value of advertising is very great . There is no farmer or tradesman but what sometimes is much in doubt as to what he really needs . The traveling agent with a bland smile may try to assure him , or the local dealer may try to palm off some inferior article . Such sources of information keep the farmer guessing , but for all that , if he be studiously inclined he is likely to arrive at pretty accurate conclusions . If he will bul turn to the bright , clean pages of the reputable journals of the country he is sure to find something worthy of consideration . Quite often one feels the need of some particular article which he does not see in the market . The local dealer either can or will not furnish it and probably knows but little about it himself . But in all probability it can be found In the advertising columns of his paper . We remember once of wanting a cheap implement for covering small patches of beans , potatoes , etc . Not being ...

A PLEA FOR TIMOTHY . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 16 February 1907

A PLEA FOR TIMOTHY . Since a dairyman said to me last summer that he had concluded not to sow any more timothy seed and would place his entire dependence on clover for his hay crop I have done much thinking and wondered if the time has come when the dairymen of Portage county can afford to entirely discard the growing of this forage crop . There is probably no denying the opinion that , as a single coarse food for cows , clover cut at the right time and properly cured , stands at the head , while overripe , coarse timothy is the poorest of our tame forage crops . But when mixed and the stand is thick enough so that the timothy does not grow coarse and the cutting is done early the mixed hay is equal , if not superior , to the clover alone . Another large dairyman of manyyears experience said to me early in July , some years ago , I am just finishing my timothy hay harvest . Clover undoubtedly makes the best hay for milch cows * but timothy , if cut when in blossom Is a close second ...

> AReasonable Plea For the Stomach [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 16 February 1907

> AReasonable Plea For the Stomach 1 If Your Stomach is Lacking In Digest - ive Power , Why Not Help the Stomach Do Its Work—Especially When It Costs Nothing to Try ? Not with drugs , but with a rein - forcement of digestive agents , such as are naturally at work in the stomach ? Scientific analysis shows that digestion requires pepsin , nitrogenous ferments , anil the secretion of hydrochloric acid . When your food fails to digest , it is proof positive that some of these agents are lacking in your digestive apparatus . Stiiart s Dyspepsia Tablets contain nothing but these natural elements necessary to digestion . and when placed at work in the weak stomach and small intestines , supply what these organs need . They stimulate the gastric glands and gradually bring the digestive organs back to their normal condition . Stuart s Dyspepsia Tablets . have been subjected to critical chemical tests at home and abroad , and are found to contain nothing but natural digestives . C...

INCREASING FERTILITY IN PAS -TURE . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 16 February 1907

INCREASING FERTILITY IN PASTURE . About four years ago I purchased a farm on which there was a 17-acre field in corn stubble . I sowed it to oats , using about 150 pounds of fertilizer per acre . In the fall it was sown to wheat and about 225 to 250 pounds of bone and phosphate were used . The field was seeded to clover , timothy , red top and alsike clover . It has been mowed twice . The crop this year was rather thin . I wish to pasture the field for two years and make a summer fallow of it in order to level up some places where it had been badly plowed . It has a very good stand of red top and timothy . How can I maintain the fertility of this field or improve it ? I have no manure to put on it . What kind of fertilizer shall I use and will it pay to use any befort : it is plowed again?—0 . S . D ., Deer field , O . For the conditions above described I would recommend a complete fertilizer analyzing three or four percent each of ammonia and potash , and ten or twelve phosphoric a...

A PRODUCTIVE FARM . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 16 February 1907

A PRODUCTIVE FARM . At the beginning of the new year many farmers who keep an account of receipts and expenditures balance up their books and take an account of stock to determine whether the years business has heen done at a profit or loss . N . R . Vandervort of Clinton Co ., 0 ., has given me an account of sales for the past year from his farm . I consider it a good showing . The farm consists of 108 acres , 4 acres being in timber . The sales were as follows : Hay , $ 40 ; wheat , $ 394 . 21 ; cloverseed , $ 41 . 50 ; cattle . $ 80 . 35 ; hogs , $ 228 . 10 ; sheep , $ 997 . 39 ; wool , $ 488 . 94 ; wifes sales , $ 253 . 80 . Total , $ 2 , 524 . 29 . The wife s sales were from the dairy , poultry yard , lard and other sundries . It will be noticed that considerable more than half the re ceipts were from sheep . Mr . V . has fine sheep and 55 head were sold as breeders at a considerable advance over market prices , so it would be unfair to compare receipts from this source with th...
