Horrid ease of intemperance . —The Portland Courier says—Yesterday a smoke was seen issuing from a house in Centre street , winch showed it to be on fire . An alarm was given and the people went in . The chamber from which the smoke came , was fastened , and the inmates eould not be prevailed to open it . The door was forced open , when a sight most shocking to humanity was presented . A man was lying on the bed so drunk as to be unable to move : the woman was also intoxicated and raving aliout the room , cursing and swearing like a maniac , and in the cradle teas a child burning to death ! The clothes and pillow in tbe cradle were much burnt , and the physician who was called in , doubted whether the child would recover . The family was given in charge to the overseers of the poor . It is said that John Randolph has received 22 , 500 for his mission to Russia .

HUrtEHS GHOST . Who has not heard of Iluyler ? He was well known in Sangamo ; and Springfield in particular „ was the scene of Ins exploits , where . perhaps , he drank more whiskey than anyother man in it . Rut . He is dead and gone—he is dead and gone At his head a grass-green lurf , ; u , d at his heels a stone . SHAK . Poor , harmless old man , and art thou indeed fftme to thy rest—to thy narrow house—to thy long , long home . Thou didst drink , it is true ; but , then , it was thine only failing . if , indeed , it could be called one in thee ; ibr thou wast ever good natiired in thy cups , and , when drunk , wast most truly meliow . How many a gill have I drawn thee , and how didst thou once quaff the rich , old Monongahela ! to thee it was sweeter than Rhenish ; and , when blushing with the rosy Stovghton , with what gusto wouldst thou swallow the capacious draught ! ever courteously reminding me to add a leetle more and , ot be quicker nor shooting . From Lilly ' s Anecdotes of the American rev -olution . [Newspaper Article] — Sangamo Journal / Illinois State Journal — 26 January 1832

From Lilly s Anecdotes of the American revolution . The American army , at tins time about Boston , was but little better provided for than the English . Many fell sick with fatigue and exposure . They had provisions enough from the country , to bo sure , while ( he English troops were said lo be living wholly on salt meat , and tbe Boston lories upon horse fle .-sh . But the whole number , in January , was reduced to less than ten thousand ; and these , having enlisted j for a few months only , were every day going home . At one time , there were hardly men enough to man the lines . As for powder , they had but four rounds to a man ; and but four small brass cannon ; and a ffe-rv old iron pieces , full of holes , with the wood-work broken off . They were fitted into logs , like the barrel of agun into the stock , and lifted up and down , and Wheeled about in this way , but to some good purpose . The British laughed at these machines , at first , but they soon found them no laughing...

From the Keepsal-e , for 1832 . The same course of reflection which led me to transmittal you the account of tbe death of an ancient borderer , induce * me to add the partieulvs of a sino-le incident , affordim ? a point which seems highly qualified to be illustrated by the pencil . It was siirrgrested by the spirited enera-iinrr of the Gored Huntsman , which adorned the first number of your work , and perhaps bears too cline a resemblance to the character of that print to admit of your choosinrr it as a subject for another . Of this you are the only competent judge . The story is an old , but not an ancient one ; the actor and sufferer was not a very aged man , when I heard the anecdote ill my early youth . Duncan , for so I shall call him , bail been enrrnrreil in the nflair of 1710 . with ! hcrs of bis class , an 1 w : is supposed by many to have been an accomplice , if not the principal actor in a certain trarric arb iir . which made much noise a good many years after the r ! . ...
