Hog Operations in Texas [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 July 1910
Hog Operations in Texas San Augustine , Tex . Editor The Berkshire World , Springfield, Ill. Dear Sir:--In reply to your request I will endeavor to outline to the readers of your valuable paper the developments now going on in East Texas in hog raising circles. Heretofore East Texas has been noted for its fast razor back hogs but is now seeking distinction along better lines and in but a short time I believe it will become known as one of the best hog raising sections in the United States for either breeders or those raising for market purposes only . Because of the natural advantages it possesses the packing interests of Texas have outlined a plan to interest the farmers in raising more and better hogs and three demonstration farms have been established ; both for the purpose of supplying pure bred stock right at home and to show what good stock will do . Each farm has been supplied with 33 head of registered hogs , a boar and ten gilts of the Berkshire , Poland China and Duroc Jer...

Some Facts About Cedar Crest Farm [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 July 1910
Some Facts About Cedar Crest Farm J. K. DERING, Proprietor The Berkshire World, Springfield, Ill. Gentlemen:--Cedar Crest Farm is located in Lake County, Ill., about 50 miles from Chicago--18 miles due west from Waukegan . The farm overlooks Fox Lake . A lake 3 1/2, long and 1 1/2, miles wide . The country around is very picturesque--there being 36 lakes in our county . The writer was born in a small town in south west Wisconsin , Darlington , and during my younger days , had a good deal to do with farm work on the farm during the summer . During the year that I was 16 years old , was a hog and corn buyer for a local concern , so it is rather natural for me to drift back to farming the first opportunity I had , which came some 10 years ago , after being located in Chicago for some 20 years in the Wholesale Coal and Mining business . I purchased a summer home on Fox Lake , and the second year began buying land , and drifted slowly into the raising of Berkshire hogs and Jersey cattle ...
IMPORTED BLOOD [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 July 1910
IMPORTED BLOOD The Use of Imported Berkshires in American Herds . For a number of years the writer has given this subject considerable thought . I have tried to convince myself that we do not need the imported Berkshire in our herds but observation has shown me that we can use the imported sow to most excellent advantage . I do not advocate the use of English boars . One may count on the fingers of one hand the imported boars that seem to have left a reputation based on the good they have exerted in our American herds . I am a firm believer in the saying that we raise here in the U . S . the best Berkshires in the world , but I as firmly believe that we have practiced in-and-in breeding as far as it may be carried with safety , and that the time has arrived for us to infuse some "Fresh blood" in our American Berkshires. It is a fact that our older breeders have been keeping pretty close to certain blood lines and practically all Berkshires in the United States with blood lines which...

EDITORIAL [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 July 1910
EDITORIAL Ten Good Berkshire Pigs Free . It should be the aim of every Berkshire breeder to place the Berkshire into the feed-lot of every farmer in America . The ultimate end of the hog is the pork barrel and this being true , the Berkshire should be raised by every farmer . We are convinced , and so are Berkshire breeders , that the Berkshire hog is the best and most profitable breed to raise , but we must convince the American farmer that this is true . There is no better way of doing this than by sending the farmer literature which sets forth the advantages of the Berkshire breed and gives live Berkshire news . The Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman is the only paper published that does this . We are confident that if you will send our publication to the farmers in your vicinity that some of them will be converted to your breed and will naturally buy their foundation stock from you . We have just arranged with a well known Berkshire breeder to furnish us ten first class regis...
