ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S DREAM. On the' afternoon of the day on which the President wss shot, there wm ik cabinet council, at which Secre tary Stanton presided. Mr. S. being at that time commander-in-chief of the Northern troops that were concen trated about Washington, arrived rather late; indeed, they were waiting for him, and, on his entering the room, the President broke off on something he was saying, and remarked : "Let us proceed to business, gentlemen." Mr. Stanton then noticed, with great surprise, that the President sat with an air of dignity in his chair, instead of rolling about iu the most ungainly attitudes, as his invariable custom was, and that instead of telling irrelevant and questionable stories ho was grave and calm, and quite a tliHereui man. Mr. Stanton, on leaving the council with th attorney-general, said to him : "That is the most satisfactory cabinet meeting I have attended for many a long; day. The following comes from a very gracefully written sketch of th Amer ican prima donna, from the pen of Lmcj Hamilton Hooper: A singular and mournful little ro mance it connected with the earlier portion of the fair singer's career. During the last rear of the war, and after one of the last great battles, the chaplain of the Massachusetts regiment was engaged in rendering the last ser vices to the dying, when he came across a young lieutenant Wing by the road aide, and evidently desperately woun ded. The chaplain proposed to sum mon medical aid, but. the young man declined the offer, saying that he was dying, and vhat he preferred to he left to pass away without further suffering. After doing what he could to make the sufferer more comfortable in his last moments, the chaplain asked the dying man if he wished to send any messages to his relatives or fronds.
