Volunteering. at the Cape. BY ZULU. TENTS were niot always pitched at night, and indeed. for the first two months or so of the campaign, it was quite the exception for us to sleep under canvas, tile mildness of the climate and beauty of the weather, rendering almost any covering, save a blanket, superflunus. When wei did so however, we managed to make things pretty comfurtable, and being, as I said before, only eight or nine to a tent, there was plenty of room. Each occupalnt, laid of course in the customary style, head out, anti feet towards the pole, with his saddle for a pillow. A cutlass stuck in the ground made a verygood candlestick, the candle being fixed in the ring. Suipper over, the evenings would be devoted to cards and harmony.
