SUDDEN DEATH AT ELTHAM. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 20 July 1883

SUDDEN DEATH AT ELTHAM. On Friday last some excitement was caused in this township by the news that the body of Mrs. Friar, the wife of a bricklayer, had been found float-   ing in a water-hole at the back of her late residence. It seems that her hus- band was working in the vicinity and on the morning named sent his wife up to the township for some refreshment. As she did not return, he went to in- quire for her, but not getting any in- formation, and his suspicions being aroused, he went to the water-hole and there he found her. His cries soon brought Mr. Ernest Harrison and Mr. Armstrong's son to his assistance, but he refused to allow them to remove the body, alleging that it would be illegal to do so. Mr. Harrison then came to the township for further assistance and met Mr. Wingrove, who returned with him. They took the body out and con- veyed it to Friar's house ; Friar or this occasion making no objection, being al- most wild with grief and horror. A careful exam...

A NEW PATENT MOUNTAIN STREAM TRAMWAGGON. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 20 July 1883

A NEW PATENT' MOUNTAIN STREAM TRAMWAGGON. At the invitation of Mr. H. Hyne, of Lilydale, a number of ladies and gen- tlemen were present one day last week at his establishment to witness the trial of a new water-tranmwaggon, for which he has just taken out a patent in Mel- bourne. The tram, as we may call it, is especially designed for mountainous country, where water-power is available, and in such places the benefits derived will be, apparently, incalculable. The model, the visitors saw at work on a miniature stream, the source of which was the domestic pump, was a small waggon, somewhat like a railway truck, with four wheels, made to run on rails either wood or iron ; but, in addition, and placed under the waggon, working on the same axles as the wheels, were two paddles, resembling those of a paddle steamboat. The waggon was placed at the lower end of a long wooden shoot, which was on an incline of one foot in five, and the sides of which were used as rails. The water was turned...

WHITTLESEA PLOUGHING MATCH. [Newspaper Article] — Evelyn Observer, and South and East Bourke Record — 20 July 1883

WHITTLESEA PLOUGHINQ MATCH.. The annual ploughing match of this branch of the Victoria Agri- cultural Society was held on Tuesday, the 10th inst., on the farm of Mr. Hy. Andrews, on the road between the Yan Yean and Woodstock roads. The weather throughout the day was pleasant, attracting a large number of farmers ann their families to the ground. The soil was of a loamy nature, and from the recent rains was in excellent condition to show good work. In the Champion Class W. Creighton, one of the cracks of the colony, again took first prize. In Class D for double-furrow ploughs, J. Garde secured the first place with a plough of his firm's own manufacture; and it speaks well for the implements turned out by this firm that 19 out of 28 were used by the prize winners on this occasion. The prizes amounted to over £100, and were distributed as follows : CHAMPION CLASS. 1st prize, £7, W. Creighton, Epping (McCalman and Garde); 2nd, L6, R. Hughes,   Wangaratta (McCalman and Garde); 3rd, £5, ...
