The Guardian. PUBLISHED FRIDAY MORNINGS. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1999. GENERAL NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville and Yarra Glen Guardian — 14 September 1900

PUBLISIIED FRIDAY MORNINGS. FR[DA Y, SEPTEJIBEIR 14, 1900. GENERAL NE WS. Now that our council are having some much needed repairs and improve ments effected in the thoroughfares of the township, there is one public build ing that the approaches to could be much improved. We refer to the police station buildings. Persons visiting that place complain that the approaches -or, rather, want of ap proaches-are a disgrace, there being no footpaths, and during the wet weather the middle of the road has to be used. The sale has been effected recently of a piece of land in the vicinity of Hall's lane, Healesville, on which the local rifle club have constructed their range. The property belonged to the City of Melbourne Building Society, and has been sold to Messrs. Lyell, Butler, and Densham, accountants, of Melbourne. Whether the new owners will allow the range to remain on the property is ...

CYCLING NOTES, 0-o Q. Park, a Sydney amateur road rider of some repute, in.tenrdis making an attempt at an early date on the 1Oq: miles N.S.W. road, record, The. time trial will he. nmader over the Goulburn- B-raidwood course. The Australian record for this distance is held by G. Broadhent, thie veteran Victorian road rider, his time (5 hrs. 3, mins.), being esta!blished in competition during the running of the \Varrnambool to. Mlel-. hourne road race in 1896. Some remarkable instances of the long life of pneumatic ty.res. are occa sionally brought to light, but we. doubt if the.following record has ever been beaten. A Melbourne cyclist- named lThos. MISCELLANEOUS. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville and Yarra Glen Guardian — 21 September 1900

MNISCELLLAzNEOUt. Dr. Parker says his first schoolmaster was an able teacher, but an out and out tyrant. He seemed to he flogging all day long, his favourite weapon being a bhazel staff, the thicker the better. One day a boy complained that another boy had called hin, a grasshopper. At once the culprit was lbrought to. book, and got thirteen strokes, which he took "like a lick o' treacle." But as he resumed his seat he couldl not help whispering to young Joe Parker, as he wrung his tingling fingers, -! By George, I'm glad I didn't.call him a hippopota Imus !' One oftthe " boys" was bragging of his accomplishments, when another of the company at the 'round table " losing patience, said to, him.--'t No,, we've heard enough about what you can do ! BAD TIME FOR THE MACHINIST. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville and Yarra Glen Guardian — 21 September 1900

BIADI TIHE FOR THE MACHINIST. --O It is not always sunshine and Iright prospects with the machinist. After a conversation with a lady expert one learns something of tile other side of the business, and an interview with Miss Tahitha Kay at her residence, S Napier-street, Fitzroy, is certainly instructive. Miss Kay has given some valuable points to a reporter. " My business," said she, " as a machinist naturally entails a consider able amount of nervous tension, as when work is brisk the hours are long. No doubt when I went to West Austra lia some two years ago my constitution was already impaired, and I fell an easy victim to typhoid. When the fever left I suffered from antemia, loss of appetite, poor digestion, and pains in the body and limbs. Tonics proved useless, and at last I grew so weak that I returned to Victoria. On arrival I was so ill that 1 had to be carried off the steamer and taken to the Federal Coffee Palace. I was treated by several well-known doctors, but I became ...
