THE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL. « Voxp'opuli, vox Dei." SATURDA^fTÎ^CEMl^Rlio, 1848. BY the arrival of the Emperor of China from South Australia, we have received European intelligence only two or three days later than what had previously been received by the Manee ; from S. Australia the news reaches up to Dec. 12. Of tbe English intelligence the most important item is the confirmation of the report of the capture of the Irish rebel chief Smith O'Brien, who was captured at Thurles on the evening of the $th August, as he was on the point of leaving that town by the railway to Limerick ; almost immediately after his arrest the' prisoner was sent to Dublin by a special train, guarded by an escort of 30 armed policemen, 'a,nd was placed in KIlmainhanr-Gaol. Several other arrests had also been made of the principal persons implicated in the rebellious move- ment. Surrender of Peschiera. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 30 December 1848

Surrender of Peschiera. The garrison of Peschiera surrendered at discretion after the battle of Goito. On marching out of the fortress, they present- ed a most deplorable picture of the mise- ries of war. They consisted of a regiment of Croatian infantry, a few companies of artillerymen, and a small picquet of Hun- garian hussars, in all about 1600 men. For many weeks previously to the surrender, the garrison had been subjected to the se- verest privations : compelled early in the eeige to replace the deficiency of salt by saltpetre and gunpowder, the men had lat- terly been kept on a third of a ration of food, and their bread merely consisted of maize, ground and made into cakes, raw, with water. During this period each ar- tilleryman became obliged to take the di- rection of two guns, while the Croatian in- fantry worked them. Their appearance on 'arriving at Parma, betrayed sadly the hard usage to wïlich they had been subjected ; the Croatians especially, although finely built me...
