HERE AND THERE. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 16 May 1912

HERE AND THERE. (rIy JOImNon WanERn.1 Johunio Walker went home the other night, combed his beard, and put a lit tio extra wax on his moustacho, after hearing it logically proved that ho is a woman. Afraid to go to sleep now, for fear he would wako up and find .himself a mermaid. Often pondered over the advice of the "hBulletin": "Go on the land,. young man." But hler is a case in point which may safely be acted upon by the single men of the district, as it. proves the wisdom of'tthe advice. A farmer who came to a certain district many years ago has become quite i? wo ealthy man, through matrimony. lHe was in poverty when he started. His first success as a yolng mnln was to marry an elderly widow with a fair sized farm. She died a few years later. THE WERRIBEE SHIRE BANNER HAS COMPLETE EQUIPMENT. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 16 May 1912

THE WERRIBEE SHIRE BANNER HAS COMPLETE EQUIPMENT. for turning out Printing of Every Doscription. It is needless to enumerate the lines. Suffice it to say that everything with printing on it is undertaken and the work is carried out with a conscientious endeavour to give satisfac- tion, full and complete. By placing your orders for Printing here you are supporting local industry. The money spent upon printing obtained from the City houses may come back to you: it is just possible. But it has to make such a long circuit that the chances of your ever handling it again are very remote. The monoy spent in having the work done locally, if it does not return to you directly, gets back eventually and within a measurable time. Then there is the question of price and quality. Printing is done at this Office at prices and in style that compare favourably with those of any of the big printing houses. These are the reasons why your orders for Printing are requested.

THE WERRIBEE SHIRE BANNER. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 16 May 1912

THE WERRIBEE SHIRE BANNER. No Resident of the District CAN AFFORD to do without his District News- paper. It is the only means by which the people of the district can keep in touch with the affairs in which they are personally interested. The City dailies and weeklies are all very well for those who wish to keep poste upon affairs of State and of the world. But does not a comparatively trifling event in our own neighbourhood loom much larger in our eyes than the downfall of a nation on the other side of the world? The local newspaper that gives all the news of its own town and District - all the doings of its people and the hap- penings - is therefore the Newspaper that holds first place in the regard of all who take a healthy interest in their surroundings. In addition to the personal claim the district Newspaper possesses it gives very real advantages from a business standpoint. Whether in business in the town or on the land it is of the utmost importance to have a knowledge of wh...

SOUTH-WESTERN PROVINCE ELECTION. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 16 May 1912

SOUTH-WESTERN PROVINCE ELECTION. Mr. Sargeant addressed a meeting in the Mechanics' Hall on Tuesday evening last. Mr. F. Cayley occupied the chair. Mr. Sargeant stated that he had a wide experience of the masses. Would give the whole of his time to his parliamentary duties, if elected. No one could draw a line against his character. Had heard that evening that their State repre- sentative did not attend to his duties. Land purchased by the Closer settlement Board worth £6 10s. per acre, the Board now wanted £13. Their State Parliament repre- sentative apparently was not attend- ing to his duties. Was in favor of restricted immigration. Was op- posed to present system of Closer Settlement. Was opposed to bring- ing out artisans to the State. The Commonwealth was over-governed -one Governor should be sufficient. Belonged to the Labor Party, but not to the extreme socialistic party. Was opposed to the centralisation of ports. Portland, Geelong and Port Albert should get their share of ...

SPORTING NOTES. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 16 May 1912

SPORTING NOTES. Some sort of an effort is, it seems, to be made at last by the Turf authori- ties to rid the racecourse of the tick- tackers and runners who in later years have become such a nuisance to the general public who patronise the     sport. In the days of that King of the Ring, Joseph Thompson, the bookmaker mostly played a lone hand and did not seem to suffer any by fighting the   enemy single-handed. But the advent of cash betting - that is on the ticket principle - originated a new school of fielders who consider there is only safe- ty in numbers. The up-to-date odds merchant lands on the course with a full staff. A clerk he must of course have, but he also at times employs a couple of other assistants whose busi- ness it is to keep their eyes open and report to their employer any movement in the Ring that might be turned to account. The one thing the present day bookmaker guards against above all others is laying over the odds, an...

WHERE OYSTERS GROW ON TREES. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 23 May 1912

WHERE OYSTERS GROW ON TREES. ----- There is no end to the natural aids to living in Soutih America. They meet you at every turn. A corres pondent who recently returned from that part of the world, writes . " Iusiness recently called me to Honduras. I had often heard of oysters growing on the trunks and tranches of trees, and my friend and I set a (lay to investigating the fact. Our dory cut the water like a knife, and tripped along rapidly and easily, with hardly a ripple in her wake, and in half an hour we had left the town, with its convent and shipping and soldiers' barracks behind us. We were nearly abreast of an island cal lcd Mlona Cave. The front of it is embowered in graceful cocoanut trees and the lower part trends oil into swamp, and is covered with ai dense growth of the red mangrove. " This mangrove tree grows in either, fresh or salt water swamps, and even three or four feet deep. The limbs of the trees send shoots or roots down into the water, and so it thicket of marg...

Oopyright. CENTLEMAN AND < BURGLAR. -4--- A SERIES OF EXCITING DETECTIVE STORIES. By Heath Crlohton, Author of "Philip Thorn, Detective," &c PART 6. CHAPTER II. I stared at Chandos in bewilder ment aihen he said he had had no hand in the strange case of threat to steal the famous picture. " Then who was it left the note on Mr. PeuOnd dressing-table 7" I asked. " Some lunatic who has been tired by my humble erample," he said. "I expect it really was this man who has been caught." " And his object ?" "More than likely it woa mere bravado, and.--ha. eover i-teended to steal it. One thing is certain, any way, if he had Intended to get a way with it he would never have succeeded. I fancy he only wantedl to create a sensation, and never meant to execute his threat." Cause for Alarm. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 23 May 1912

Cause for Alarm. "I suppose you visited all the points of interest while you wore abroad," said one young woman. "No," answered the other, "we were so busy addressing picture postcards to our friends that we hadn't time to do much sightseeing." The world is full of hopeless failures that could have been successes had they devoted to real work one-half the energy devoted to complaining. They say that a woman and music should never be dated. / Most men' would be good if they lived, in monasteries. LJght-hearted people are-always on the lookout for sunshine. "Pleaso see that we are' called in' time to catcll the nine o'clock train in the morning," said a man to the !'boota".at an hotel. ...
