'SEEING THE ELEPHANT.' [Newspaper Article] — The Wyalong Star and Temora and Barmedman Advertiser — 13 July 1894

« SEEING THE ELEPHANT.' Suddenly my attention was attracted by a dark spot in the distance upon the road.' -It was moving, moving rapidly in the direction . of the station. As it came nearer it looked like an animated barn, an3 it had approached within a Quarter of a mile before I could be certain that it belonged to the animal kingdom. Then, in the twinkling of an eye, my worst fears were realised. I saw that the creature had four large un wieldy legs, two great flapping ears, and a tmnk, that it was, in a word, an elephant, and thatrit was travelling toward me with a momentum of which I never : thought an elephant capably. As I look back, my Oriental experiences seem to crystallise into the awful moment when La waited the on slaught of that formidable beast. Two alternatives 'presented themselves to: me,. either to fly for shelter into the telegraph offiise,.o'r to open iny sun-umbrella in the face of the advancing animal with a vi&w to im parting some of my own ierror to ...

THE FAMILY HORSE. [Newspaper Article] — The Wyalong Star and Temora and Barmedman Advertiser — 13 July 1894

the Family hobse. Thefamily horse is the most admired and useful of all domestic animals. In many ?families they have been twenty years in their service. They are faithful, kind and true, land, when their days of usefulness are about oyer j; rather than see go into the bands oi strangers, peruaps to be abused, they.are kept in idleness until a natural death liber ates them, or if enfeebled or diseased their life is' ended with as little pain as possible. Hence, m choosing a family horse, that is, one that any grown member of the family can handle and drive with safety, obtain one of a knqwn kind disposition. Speed is of secondary importance. .Do hot sacrifice safety for looks. Neither should he be small. One weighing eleven hundred pounds is none too heavy, as often they- will be required to haul a two-seated vehicle - containing four persons, and a heavy horse can readily do this regardless of the condition of the high way. Do not purchase a dainty eater, but preferably one that ha...

NAPOLEON. [Newspaper Article] — The Wyalong Star and Temora and Barmedman Advertiser — 13 July 1894

NAPOLEON, But for Napoleon it is not improbable that the good the French Revolution bore in its train would have been altogether lost for mankind ; the equality before the law, the liberation of the soil, and the establishment of religions freedom, were finally assured by nis master hand ; and he was at once the champion of order and the stern foe of an arohy. The great measures, too, which were especially his own, mark him out as a splendid oreative genius: the Concordat pro bably saved religion in France ; the Code will send- him down to the remotest ages; his whole administrative system, if too highly centralised, was a marvel of vigorous and successful energy : and his work, in all that relates to domestic affairs, has stood the infallible test of time. Tt ia miniMWftc^nr +Y\ I dwell on the noble public works which remain monuments of tho glories of his reign. Scientific Notes. THE GOLD CURE FOE SORE THROAT. [Newspaper Article] — The Wyalong Star and Temora and Barmedman Advertiser — 13 July 1894

Scientific Notes. THE GOLD .CUBE FOB SORE THROAT. A well-known Portlander wears -a neck lace, and is no dude, either. He. is exceed ingly sensitive to sore throat and he believes the gold chain protects him from it. Whan he was married his wife found that he con stantly wore a string of gold beads around I ms necK. one naa u sue xoitn m ineir re ' medial property, and when the string broke one day she was in no huriy to replace it. Bnt her husband came home with a cad sore ; throat and she was so converted to this gold cure that she bought him aohain that would be less likely to break than the string of beads. He has probably worn gold around his neck for at least twenty yean, and you can't convince him that it is merely a whim.
