Wodonga & Towong Sentinel. "Awake! Arise! Or be for ever fallen!"—MILTON. FRIDAY, AUGUST 27, 1886. [Newspaper Article] — Wodonga and Towong Sentinel — 27 August 1886

"Awake I Arisoj Or b" for soer fallenl F:RIDA " , AUGUST 2 7, iS8ri. We confess to a feeling of profound disappointment at the present unfortu nate state of local political allhirs in Wodonga. lThat Mr W. L. FEinIER, onr old champion, is about to leave uis, is a inisfortuine, to be regretted, but itievitable in its-nature, and not to be in iany sway obvirted. That AMr NEWsNAN. shlould desert his friends: in the council, is another . mislhap, which we shall in time, after a decorous inter val of sorrow, be able to recover from. Things will 'still go an in their old accustomed fashion,, and smiles will .returi to councillois':;' faces, even tlhougli the table which olnce roared iat hie lato presidont's jokes shoull know liini and them inntieore. But what we think is ieally pitiable,'and not too deeply to be deplored, is the lamieet able want of public..spirit shown in filling the places of the departing leaders. Surely in a district where well-to-do rseidelits are so numerous as in th...

TO THE EDITOR OF THE SENTINEL. [Newspaper Article] — Wodonga and Towong Sentinel — 3 September 1886

TO THE ElDITOR OF THIE ENTINEL. SIit,-I was glad to 'see a letter from Thornely-or the " Kergunyal goius," as "J.I." very properly called him. The nmunbers of the Yack. Oouacil are apt to ,ot the sanlo disease as the roaldlcl- indolont or lazy. The latter term will apply to the roadnaon anyway. Please, Mr Editor, allow me to give the public a little more information. These. same roadnmn cart the sawn timber fromt Nisbet's mill, and bring down about 150 foot at a time. It often takes two days to cart a largo Ipad, which costs 13s lid per day, or 183 per 100 foot. Nisbet carts the timber near tlhrc times the distance for about Us per 100 feet, so the council atre either very genterous or very careless with our imoneys. Ott otne occa sion the roaduw?n carted timberT from the mills to tlih work, and thian found they luid the wronlg sort and carted it back. Query--WVho pays the piperr 1-I am also infounretl that pehorttint posts are being put in the gromld, which every one knows is littl...

YACKANDANDAH SHIRE COUNCIL. TO THE EDITOR OF THE SENTINEL. [Newspaper Article] — Wodonga and Towong Sentinel — 3 September 1886

YACKANDANDAH SHIRE COUNCIL. TO THE EDITOR OF THE SENTINEL. SIR, - Please again allow me a small space in your valuable paper to show how   the members of the abovenamed council grind their, or rather the ratepayers' axe, to their own advantage. It is now some six months since the engineer was insturcted to prepare plans and specifica- tions for works to be done near Mr. T. Briggs', and nothing done yet. Now, Mr Briggs has been paying rates for over twenty years, and with great difficulty and danger can manage, with a good horse, to get out with an empty dray. Now, not the difference. At the meeting in July instructions were given the engi- neer to get a good road near Mr M'Leod's made better, and the work was let last meeting. Under these circumstances, is it any wonder that the Upper Kiewa are wishing they were annexed to Bright? I   must alos mention that there are three or four families who require the road done near Mr Briggs'. - Yours, &c., ELI...
