3MELBOURNE. (FrOm OUl' OWN COuEBI'ONDENT.) March 9. The foot racing and sports on the rilcket ground, hold on Saturday and Monday last, woro finanoially a monster sucess. Never have there been such crowds gathered to see any public event as there wore on Saturday inside thl fence at least 18,000,.and outside on the hill atldast 5,000, persons were present. On Monday the gathering was very little less, and although a great deal of squeezing and crushing wore required to get anything like a view of what wsa going on, there was very little quarrelling, and the police managed to keep themselves and the public in perfect good humour.' Of course, the public interest was ehiofly concerned in the various races between Harris and Hewitt, and on the former winning the first race for 150 yards great enthusiasm was displayed, and :,eertainly,.ho.np naro'L wntnitrwthl"great ease, getting at least two yards by a capital'start, and'winning by about threoe yards.. THE LATE CHURCH OF ENGLAND SERVICES. To the Editor of the Benalla Ensign. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 11 March 1870

THE LATE CHURCH OF ENGLAND   SERVICES. To the Editor of the Benalla Ensign. Sir,—I noticed in your last issue a letter from   a correspondent, who asks "Why a man not in holy orders should be allowed to preach from the pulpit in direct contradiction to the 23rd Article?" In reply, I never allowed any man not in holy     orders to preach from my pulpit. It is true I asked a gentleman (who, as your correspondent believes, is in his own walk honourable and proficient enough), and who is a member and communicant of our church, rather than to close the church, to supply my place during my absence in Mel- bourne to pay the last tribute of affection to a near relative and very dear friend. But on that occasion, my friend carefully continued himself to those parts of our services which a layman with the sanction of the Bishop, and at the request of the incumbent, can in an emergency always do. The objection seems to me to be raised against...

BENALLA POLICE COURT. Saturday, March 5, (Before Messrs Perry and Heath.) Thomas Keating, a drover from New South Wales, was charged with trespassing upon the   purchased land of Hector Norman Simson, by driving 1,300 sheep across Emu Bridge, near Tatong. The damage was laid at £2 149. 2d. Keating pleaded guilty, and the Bench ordered the amount to be paid, with 2s 6d costs., Mr Simson then said he had brought the present action because the defendant had been acting under instructions from others, to show them they would not be allowed to trespass upon his purchased land with impunity.

MANSFIELD. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 18 March 1870

;MANSFIELD. FaRO THE " INDEPSNDENT." We do not think it was Power who stuck up the man Kennedy near the Devil's River last week. ' Unlike our own special bandit,' he, with usipower-liko modestyi was veiled, and I appe1tred without that celebrated gentleman's f constant companion, the "double barrel." [ We feel rather inclined to believe that in this case _the robber was some man who had met i Kennedy at Jannieson, and had either seen a large sum of money in his possession or heard c of his being a fortunate gold digger from New Zealand, and then followed his unsuspecting t victim on his road home. It appears that Kennedy does not know whether the man actually fired at him or merely discharged a chamber of his revolver to frighten him into submission. When will our people have suffi cient self-respect to look upon it as a duty to defend their property, oven at the risk of their lives, from these pirates? With examples such is Kennedy and Constable Tighe, bushranging may well bhe expe...
