Local Intelligence. HOSPITAL PICNIC. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 7 April 1877

Local Intelligence. HOSPITAL PICNIC. Oh Easter Mopday a picnic was held upon the P. and A. Show Ground in aid of the funds of our local hospital, and which must be regarded, from the large attendance, as an undoubted financial success. The day was clear and warm, so that the total absence of shade waB rather an inconvenience ; but the site chosen being so convenient to town doubtless attracted more than would have attended a scene farther removed, and num bers wended their way thither until a late hour in the afternoon. It was anticipated that the friendly societies would have formed a procession to the ground, as upon a former occasion, but the United Miners alone res ponded in the affirmative to the Committee's invitation, and as the drum and fife band required, in lieu of giving their services gra tuitously as they did last year, a sum that it waB not deemed advisable to promise, no demonstration of the kind was made, and it was consequently somewhat later than ordi nary ueiore t...

HIGH-TONED POLITICAL DISCUSSION. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 21 April 1877

HIGH-TONED POLITICAL DISCUS- 1 SION. (From the Burlington Hawkeye.) ?- -There is one thing,' said Mr. Lutherby, 83 he was walking down town yesterday morn-v ,/ing, ' that disgusts me with politics, and / that is the violent and abusive tone in which ' our daily papers conduct tho discussion of every issue and question which they touch upon.' ' Indeed, you may well be disgusted at it,' replied old Mr. Bartholomew, who had just joined him. ' It is as much as a man can do to lift a newspaper off his door with a pair of tongs. ' ' It is, in truth,' replied Mr. Letherby. ' It is worse than a contamination ; it is cor ? rupting ; it has a degrading, brntalizing influence that is, I am convinced, undermin ing the foundations of our moral structure. The daily Press of to-day is one great engine 'of abuse, defamation, bad gr...
