At all events tenaeSp were Hilled for and accepted, the contractor being bound to have the church completed In Janiliry, 1878. 4' Since that time the committee for the* , erection of the Union Church (if there is any) have slumbered so peacefully that not even a snore has been heard to denote that they are still in existence. In passing over tho proposed site...

Dickens in one of his inimitable word portraits, tlie death of the crossingsweep er Joe, makes that poor little waif say of the various Christian teachers that ham sought to instruct him, that all lie ujiderr stood of what they said to hiin was ' thaff^ they,' (his teachers), 'mostly said as how the others prayed wrong.' This is about what the educational controversy has ar rived at, and we think for tlie most part the point at issue has been lost sight of, and that is whether a minority of the community shall have the power to upset the system of education that meets the wishes of the majority. The Public Schools Act says, in effect, that all children shall receive a primary education, and that wherever a certain number can bo got together.a school/will be established. The books used are iden tical with those approved of by the lead ing dignitaries of the English and Roman Catholic Churches in Ireland, under the National system, and while the ground work of scriptural troths is int...
