The Federal Contest, 3ENTY. MR CROUCH AT MURRU3MBEENA. A meeting of electors of Henty, which was attended by several ladies, was held at the Public Hall, Murrumbeena, on Friday evening, 31st ult., to hear the views of Mr R. A. Crouch, who. seeks election as a Liberal Protectionist. Mr J. D. Bartrop occupied the chair and in a few suitable remarks introduced the candidate. Mr Crouch said he had oeen asked to contest the constituency by certain Liberals who were dis satisfied with its representation and vho were also anxious about the .ariff. He was strongly in favor of raising the tariff. Higher duties in many lines were wanted, so that he , ;645,000,000 worth of goods that were imported now might be made here. Municipal Elections. NORTH WARD. Mr W. H. Hunt, who is a candidate for the position of a representative in the Oakleigh Borough Council for the above ward, addressed the ratepayers in the Mecha-ics' Hall on Tuesday evening. The Mayor (Cr Knight) presided and there was a fair attendance, including several ladies. The Candidate, who was well received, stated that although he had been in Oakleigh for 4 years and taken a great interest in local affairs, this was the first time he had appeared on a public platform. It was up to him to give his qualifications for representing this ward. He would first refer to a few statement which had been going about bearing- on his per sonal intergity. In the West Ward of Oakleigh Cr Bribe will give an account of his stewardship on Tuesday even ing next in the Congregational Church. On Wednesday evening Mr N. R. The War. At the meeting of the Mulgrave Shire Council on Thursday, Cr Jordan moved that the council donate the sum of £20 to the Patriotic Fund. Cr McLorinan se conded the motion, which was carried enthusiastically, councillors rising and singing the National Anthem. On Thursday afternoon a meet ing, convened by the Mayor, was held in the Mechanics' Institute to consider the best means of assisting the troops on active service. The Mayor presided and there were 100 ladies present. ivIr Greenwood, secretary of St John's Ambulance Association (who has seen 15 years service in the British Army), ex plained the duties required of volunteer trained women in time of war. All present formed them selves into a branch of the Red Crdss society to provide comforts for the troops, and an Executive Committee of nine was appointed; I president, the Mayoress; secretary Mrs Birch; assistant secretary, Mrs Kitson; treasurer, the Mayor. Oakleigh Police Court. Thursday, August 13. Before Messrs McLorinan (chair man), Jordan, O'Leary and Henry, J's.P. DEBT, Otto Weiss v. John Bruce, claim £5/10/-, making pair of venetian shutters. Mr Evans for complainant and Mr Westley for defendant. The evidence showed that the shutters were delivered in December lost, but the timber and hinges were not up to specification and it was stated that anyone could see through them. The Bench said they were of the opin ion that defendant had taken de livery, but deducting the value of the timber and hinges made an order for X3/7/-, with 1/1i/ costs. A stay for 14 days was granted. PETTY LARCENY. Herbert Wadham was charged with having in his possession a billiard table brush suspected of being stolen. Defendant, with Thomas Phipps and John George Urqgihart were charged on Mon day, 3rd inst., before Mr Nicoll. J.P., with offensive behaviour in Broadway. The case was proved by Sergt. Football. OAKLEIGH WEST v. MORDI ALLOC. The second match of this newly formed club took i'lace on Satur day last, when the Oakleigh team met the Mordialloc juveniles on the latter's ground. In the first quarter a brilliant goal was kicked by C. Taylor, of Oakleigh, after a strenuous struggle, Mordialloc scoring 1 goal 5 behinds. At the conclusion of the 2nd quarter Oak leigh was leading by 11 points, Masterton and Ryan doing good work on the ball for Oakleigh, while Williams and Hohngren dis tinguished themseives for Mor dialloc.
