AUSTRALIAN BUSHRANGING. THE EARLY DAYS. CHAPTER V.-Continued. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 20 December 1905

AUSTRALIAN BUSHRANGING. THE ZE^ZR/ZL/ST ZEXA/^TS. By CHARLES WHITE. Chapter V. — Continued. Early in the year a company of nino convicts, mostly 'lifers,' escaped from the neighborhood, of of Yass, and a man named Dignuin and two other runaways 'took the bush.' Subsequently the three were joined by a mero youth named Comcrford, who is described as tall and fair, having a most pre possesssing cast of countenance, and by five other convicts, who absconded from the service of the masters to whom they had been' assigned. The gang at its full strength number nine with Dignum as leader and Comcrford as first lieutenant. After committing many crimes in the neighborhood of Melbourne, and creating a widespread iceling of alarm among the settlers, they determined to quit that territory and cross the continent to some seaport, in the hope, doubtless, of making a clean escape from the country. They appeared to have started on ? their journey without any definite idea where it was to end, but wh...

The New Liquor Bill. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 20 December 1905

The New Liquor Bill. The new Liquor Bill just passed, and which comes into force at the end of the year constitutes one of the best and most beneficent legis lative efforts of the Carruthers' or any other N.S.AV. Ministry. The reforms are generally in accord with public opinion, and should really prove acceptable to the hotelkeeper who is really desirous of conducting his business in a respectable manner and avoiding the disgraceful practices which in many instances have grown up with the existing system. Mr. Carruthers, then, deserves all the credit for tackling a measure other Ministries had shirked, and, in the face of determined opjjosition, carrying it through both Houses. In the new Act there are three additional classes of persons be yond those named in the principal Act to whom a licensee must not supply grog — anybody under 18 years, any aboriginal native of Australia, or any of the colored races of the South Pacific Islands. Then any person who sends a boy or girl under th...

As You Like It. [?] [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 20 December 1905

As You Like It. 'I iiiuhI Imve Illicrly Withal, as lurso n rhnrlvr in tho wind, To Wow on wfioiii I iilcii«c.' -' An you Like it.' (Act II., so. 7). In nearly every small country town there ia one individual [generally a storekeeper] who lias managed to get the majority of tlie linancially middle or poorer classes into his clutches, until they can hardly call their bodies their own. An unbounded system of credit is invariably responsible for this unde sirable state of things. A case in point. The other day an individual in a nor thern town wanted to engage a laborer, and three [one after the other] expressed their willingness to engage, but with the reservation that, they must 'see Mr. Blank [the local storekeeper] first.' And apparently not one of them ob tained the big man's consent to go out of the district. Many of the South Coast best estates represent an aggrega tion of small holdings which have car ried a heavy mortgage and a ruinous in terest charge, while store goods at ex ...

ODDS AND ENDS. The total number of aborigines and half-castes in the different Bta tions and depots in Victoria is 305. The brilliant and fascinating opera 'Faust,' by Gounad, only brought its accomplished author the sum of £80, but it established his reputation. The death of Mr. Thomas Park, a chemist and druggist of over 50 years in Sydney, is announced. He was 75 years of age, and was a descendant of Mungo Park, the celebrated African explorer, whose tales of travel are so popular with, schoolboys. An old Victorian colonist, Mrs. Annie Maria Dawbin, died a few days ago, at South Yan Yean. Mrs. Dawbiu had the honor of being presented to Queen Victoria and tho Empress Eugenie. In her prosperous days her father was one of the staff-officers of tho Duke of Wellington, and was with his com mander at the battle of Waterloo. There was an old woman who lived in a shoe ; She'd so many children she didn't know what to do. Why had she so many, instead of a few? Because, because — well, it m...

Polly's Story. A SERIAL STORY. PART I. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 23 December 1905

Polly's St®3-yB A SKltrAL STOliY. PART I. Anyhow sho did not succeed in frightening Miss Priscilla. Lad}' Dorothea had onlt'-red into no par ticulars, and had liioiitioned none of the confusion which Wild Dar rell's handsome face and reckless behaviour had caused in peaceful homes and peaceful women's breasts — and dear Miss 1'riscilla's innocence was so entire. She must have had vague ideas about the terror ho was supposed to inspire — indeed I had odd notions about it myself, though I had been rougher brought up, of course, and was a bit older for my years. Any how, both Miss Prtecilln. and I came to t!io conclusion that, in a general way, Wild Itarrcll must be a very wic!;c(l person,' hut we also came to the conclusion that individually he must also be very interesting and agreeable, and that we should both like (o see him very much. One day Miss Priscilla and I were standing at that very locked gate I have told vou about. It was often my young lady's pleasure that I should accom...
