EMnPIREl D ' .... LOCAL CELEBRATIONS. Empire Day was celebrated on Fri day throughout Victoria with the usual nasoifestations of loyalty, and we are glad to say that Portland did her part well. The weather was pea fect, and the day will long be remembered by Ihe young people as one of the brightest and happiest of their lives. In the morning ths programme set out by the Education Department was-obsersed at the State School almost in its eon tirety. In place of the ordinary lessons the teachers read or recited stories of asn hibtorical and patriotic character, descriptive of deeds that won the Em. pire.Athalf-pasbsten the usual ceremony of. saluting the flag was performed, Tlh~s function is of a public character, and quite a number of .parents and re presentative townspeople witnessed it. At 2 o'clock the children of all the rchools mustered at the intersection of Julha and Percy streets, and, headea hy she Portland Band, marched to the beach, where they were provided with amusements and regaled with lolliee and buns.
