AGRICULTURAL SHOWS. [Newspaper Article] — The Moruya Times and South Coast Journal — 8 May 1889

AGHICULTUKAi SHOWS With each recurring Annual Show in Horuya, the following questions usually crop up. Do these periodi cal diKplays fui/j] the mission antici pated by the originators ? Should they be held annually ? Would it not bo betk-r to hfJd the shoivs every thiitl yoar at Braidwood, Bega and Jloruya respectively ? And some extremists ask, would it not be wise to aboli-sh the shows al together? Now these questions open up a lar»-e field of debatable ground which we could not pretend to traverse in the small amount of space at our disposal. With refer ence to the first question we must certainly reply in the affirmative. AH those who have watched our shows in Moi uya, say most empha tically, that nearly every section and class in each successive year show an improvement. Some years, by reasoii of the adverse seasons, aud couscquent lack of interest on the part of exhibitors, have been comparative failures, whilst on the other hand, good seasons, substan tial prizes, and a commo...

Grains of Gold. [Newspaper Article] — The Moruya Times and South Coast Journal — 8 May 1889

Grains of Gold. Conscience is at most times a very faith ful and prudent lulmonitor. Few men aro raised in our estimation by being too closely examined. If men would consider the end of sin, they would shun the beginning of it. Always hold fast to love. Wo win by tenderness and conquor by forgiveness. Strikers iuv too apt to forget that capital never gruws hungry, oven in strikes. Honesty sometimes keeps a man from be coming rich, «.ud civility {rcm being witty. Our cbeif end is to be freed from all, if it may be, howuvur, {ram the greatest evils. Knowledge is the hill which few many hop« to climb. Duty is tho path nil miiy tread. A propensity to hope and joy is real riches ; ono to fear and sorrow, rea.1 poverty. To most men experience is like the storn lights of a ship, which illumine only the trick it has passed. Opinions quite often are a mere com promise between what a man doesn't know aud what he guesses at. Fa.rae and reputation nnd weak ties : many have not the least sense o...

Paris Exhibition. [Newspaper Article] — The Moruya Times and South Coast Journal — 8 May 1889

Paris Exhibition. The first of the ceremonies in connection with the Paris Exhibition took place to-day at Versailles. President Carnot delivered an oration. A blank cartridge was fired at the President while ho was leaving the Hall of Mirrors : the ruffian was immediately arrested, and the crowd tried to lynch him. A New York clergyman tells this story : ' I was writing by my study window, and a little child was busying himself by throwing beans at the window. Losing all patience I rushed oat of tlte house, determined to frighten the boy. It happened that his mother was coming after him at the same moment, and we met by his side. I stormed at the child, and then, as the mother seemed excessively stupid, 1 gave her a piece of uiy miud. Finally, as a grand and overwhelm ing conclusion to tny scolding, 1 said : ' A little discipline now with your children will save you much pain, if not disgrace, iu the future. Thiuk of that, madam ; that is, if you ever do think.'' Think, is it f sbe...
