France, Germany, Italy, Austria, and Switzerland bave agreed that their Embassies and Consulates shall send borne indigent persons of their respective nationalities, to be conveyed at baU the ordinary railway fares. Gardening is regularly and practically taught in mora than 20,000 primary schools in Franoe. Every school-house has its gar den, and teachers must not only be good gardeners but qualified to teach horticulture, or they cannot pass examination. Numbers oE gentlemen in London. are breaking up tbeir bunting and driving studs, and there arc now some hundreds of hunters, cobB, carriage horses, and backs on the market. It is stated that Trickctt intends to procced to England to row Hanlan for the championship of the world. The Mercantile Bank have declared a dividend of 9 per ccnt. Intelligence from Levuka states that a fearful cyclone has been experienced at the Fiji Islands, doing much damage to the crops, the shipping, and other pro perty. At Nadi, a tidal wave broke orcr the beach, and continued its course for two miles into the bush, sweeping everything before it. On Tuesday morning Scott and liogan were executed at Dariinghuret gaol. About fifty magistrates and other officials were admitted within the gaol, but the Press were excluded. The robbers were a Frenchmen and a half-caste. They both cscapcd, taking with them horses, sad dles, bridles, a rifle, and a rug. THURSDAY, Jan. 22. Two men have been seen tampering with the telegraph wires near Bcnalla. It is suspected they are some of the Kelly gang. Sub-Inspector O'Connor with his black troopers hare been despatched in pursuit.

Six months ago it was confidently asserted by the supporters of the Minis try, and by each newspapers AS professed to know all about tlic matter, that the pastoral lessees in tlie vicinity of the western towns were perfectly willing to co-operate with the Government in their Bcheinc for cutting up the Unrcoo runs into agricultural areas. It was antici pated that the lessees would at once liastcu to support the action taken by the Government, and remove all obstacles to the speedy settlement of the laud. Had they done so the Crown surveyors would by this time have got everything ready for the smaller voracious birds who arc to supersede the " cormorants." But it is evident now thai the pastoral tenants in this district are not favorable to the proposed innovation, and will pro tect themselves as long as they are able.
