BALLARAT VERSUS BENDIGO. [Newspaper Article] — Ovens and Murray Advertiser — 15 January 1857

UAl.LAR.VT VERSUS BKNDIQO. The question as to whether Bullarat or Bendigo is the leading, or, as the phrase runs, the '? metropolitan" go.d field of the colony, and as a conse quence of the world, has long been :» ,-ubj.ct of dispute bet.veeu the residents and journals of the two districts. That thi-< gold fi hi has lately, in escort re turns, far outstripped her rival, hu lieen for some time admitte.l by all par ties, but it has i.eeu maintained by our opponents that the aggregate produce of Bendigo, since the discovery of gold, -till considerably exceeds our own. &fcbtrti3ec. PUBLISHED D A I L Y~ THURSDAY, JAN'UAKY lfi, 1S«7. WAGES AXD COMBINATION. TUB compositors employed upon the Argus have, by a combined withdrawal from work, compelled the proprietors of that journal to acknowledge that the demand which the former made for an increased remuneration was founded on the peculiar condition of the trade to which they bjong, and not to any other circumstances beyond the influ ence or control of the laws of supply and demand. The proprietors of the Argus, in succumbing thus early in tile contest, have shown more discretion than they did in provoking the out break. Irresistible pr-.ols have been given that the rate of wages before the strike was not in accordance with the increasing demand for compositors, and the impossibility of meeting it. .The Government printing-offices have been in that degree overladen vith work, that notwithstanding hands hive been taken on whenever they could be found, everything in it was behind hand.
