"ROUGH AND READY. " I he Charleston Mercury, in noticing the late correspondence ot Gen. Scott, remarks :—"The official announcement that Gen. Taylor is to continue in command ol Ihe army ol Mexico, will be received wilh universal and lively satisfaction by tho country. Not thaf we doubt General Scott's courage or knowledge of military allairs,—nor lhat we can toke any pleas nre in seeing him mortified. But we believe Gen, Taylor has the qualities of a successful chief in a far higher degree.— Wilh n frame of iron, with,_great siropli cily of manners, with the habit of endurance, with courage nnd coolness equal to Ihe severest dials, he unites a heartiness of character, that has made him more beloved by his soldiers than any man since Jackson. Nothing can compensate for the want of this warm _s/mpithy between the Chief and his men—il is the soul of success."
