Are Wifebeaters more than just the name of shirts? [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 14 January 1999

Are Wifebeaters more than just the name of shirts? By Melissa Sperl Orange Source Syracuse University I remember the first time I heard the term "wifebeater" as it pertains to clothing. At home in friendly Minnesota, I was shopping with a friend, whom I will refer to as "Brand Name Boy." He began a discussion detailing the points of his argument that Abercrombie and Fitch's wifebeater — although more expensive — was a much better deal than those offered at other stores. "What are you talking about?" I said with a furrowed brow. "You know," he retorted. "Muscle shirts. Tank tops." Hey, I don't want to stereotype people who wear wifebeaters, but when clothing crosses the line into blatant dull-wittedness and scorching harassment, I have to speak up. I am willing and proud to make a broad statement about the type of person who walks into a store and, from below a baseball cap brim, asks the cashier: "Heymmm, do you sell those wifebeater shirts?" This exact scene happened the ot...

The Ten Best films of 1998 [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 14 January 1999

The Ten Best films of 1998 The Behrend Review CHARLES TESTRAKE The criterian I used for selecting my choices for the Ten Best Films of 1998 were: What impact did the film have upon me? Could I empatize with the characters of the film and understand their pain and pleasure'.' Was there any thought provoking ideas or messages within the film? And finally and perhaps most importantly, did I like the film? However it should be noted that this list is incomplete. For I have not seen and probably will never have time to see every film that was released last year. Also several films which I plan to sec. such as "Shakespeare In Love" or "AThin Red Line" have not come to an Erie area movie theater. 10. MEET JOE BLACK: When this film was released in theaters about two months ago it was unfairly rebuffed by many critics for being "too long". While I will admit the film could have been shortened by about a half an hour, it was never the less a fascinating story about "Death." A media ...

Behrend Singing the Blizzard Blues [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 14 January 1999

Behrend Singing the Blizzard Blues What You Talkin'bout Willis WILUORDAN What is the deal with the snow clean up here on campus as well as on the main roads'' I think that it is a shame when people have to tread through snow and risk slipping on ice and slush just to get to class. I don' t know if the maintenance people who are supposed to lake care of these issues are undermanned or not skilled in plowing the walkways or what. I personally have worked on a highway department crew and have never left walkways unshoveled or slush and ice on stairways for people to slip on and fall. I understand that the plow crews have been plowing throughout the persistent snow that had been falling the past few days. By Tuesday afternoon however, the precipitation was basically wet and would not stick. When I worked for the highway department, on days like this, we would shovel up the slush and put down sand instead of salt so there would be more traction. The sand would also absorb some ...

Internships Becoming Route To Jobs For MBA Students [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 14 January 1999

Internships Becoming Route To Jobs For MBA Students By Diana Kunde Knight-Ridder Newspapers Forget the job interview. These days, business students and employers are paying almost as much attention to the right internship. In a tight labor market, companies like the inside track that an internship provides to the best and brightest job candidates. And MBA students know it. "The competition for the choice, high-paid and high-profile internships is quite intense," said Jamie King, director of MBA career services at the University of Texas at Austin. Summer internships have long been features of full-time MBA programs. But in recent years, the quality of these jobs has improved, university officials say. "There are more real projects instead of just doing the work no one had time to do during the year," said Peter Veruki, director of career planning and placement for Vanderbilt University's Owen Graduate School of Business in Nashville, Tenn. At the same tim...

Flying 'Jesus' Convicted of Assaulting Airline Attendant [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 14 January 1999

Flying 'Jesus' Convicted of Assaulting Airline Attendant By Michael James The Baltimore Sun _____ BALTIMORE - A federal judge convicted a Maryland man Tuesday of assaulting a flight attendant during an "air rage" incident aboard a Baltimore-bound plane, where the man touched off pandemonium when he went berserk after proclaiming himself to be Jesus. Judge Catherine C. Blake also rejected a defense plea that Dean William Trammel, 22, be found not criminally responsible. Those on board testified during the five-day trial that Trammel had been polite and calm for the first several hours of the flight, which originated in Los Angeles. But as the plane approached Baltimore, the burly college student left his seat and began blessing nearby passengers. He told a flight attendant that he was Jesus and, when she asked him to take his seat and prepare for landing, he replied that God had ordered him to remain standing for the rest of the trip. At one point he tried to get into the c...

Colleges should do more to stop sports gambling [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 14 January 1999

Colleges should do more to stop sports gambling College Press Exchange SAN ANTONIO (CPX) - The worst problem affecting college sports today may be illegal gambling, and colleges and universities should do more to crack down on it, said NCAA president Cedric Dempsey. "I challenge you to send a clear message that your athletics programs will not be used as the poker stake in sports wagering and point shaving," Dempsey told delegates at the National Collegiate Athletic Association's annual convention on Sunday. "We, all of us in college sports and higher education, must turn up the heat. We must take the initiative to help uncover student bookie operations on our campuses." The integrity of collegiate sports programs is already under fire and will continue to lose respect if schools don't do more to fight illegal gambling, he said. Dempsey also warned school officials not to "look the other way" when they know that boosters are betting on games and that students are wagering on...

English Immersion is an Unexpected Hit [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 14 January 1999

English Immersion is an Unexpected Hit By Louis Sahagun Los Angeles Times LOS ANGELES- At elementary schools scattered across Los Angeles, teachers are delivering promising reports that their students are learning English more quickly than anticipated six months after the implementation of California's anti-bilingual education law, Proposition 227. "I honestly didn't expect to see them achieve as well as they are doing," said Jose Posada, bilingual education coordinator at Los Angeles Elementary School in Koreatown. "Many of us who believed in the bilingual education program were scared about the unknowns," he said. "Now we're saying, 'Well, maybe it's not so bad. Maybe it's time we start talking about the positives.' " In interviews at 13 Los Angeles Unified School District campuses with large immigrant populations, primary grade teachers said their students are absorbing verbal English at a surprising pace. Some children are even taking the next step and learning to read a...

Website of the week By Seamas O'Toole staff writer Depending on one's major, finding a summer internship can be very easy, or it can be horribly difficult. Many employers advertise their internship positions on the Internet, but the stu-Jent searching for a job may have to sort through hundreds and hundreds Df companies' websites before he or she finds what they are looking for. All one has to do is choose the type of internship they are looking for and a city and state. Jobs Now will produce a list of matches to the student's request. In Remembrance: Those who died in 1998 [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 14 January 1999

In Remembrance: Those who died in 1998 By Jon Stubbs entertainment editor If one can look past all of the political turmoil that gained most of the media's attention in 1998, he or she would realize that the entertainment world lost some really outstanding individuals. Some of those who passed away had become legends in their own time, and some were well on their way to attaining that status. Let us look back to this past year's tragic losses, not to weep over their departures, but to recognize the contributions that they made to show business. Flip Wilson 1935 - 1998 Born Clerow Wilson in New Jersey, Flip Wilson grew up in poverty, being moved in and out of foster homes. Wilson dropped out of high school at age 16 and later joined the Air Force, where he earned his nickname because of his sense of humor. The Flip Wilson Show stretched four seasons from 1970 - 1974, and rated number two in the country during its first two seasons. "I wasn't the first black to headline a vari...

1998 never to be forgotten [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 14 January 1999

1998 never to be forgotten Out OJBounds JASON SNYDER With each passing year, it seems as though there is some special event that captures the hearts of many Americans. 1998 was just that and more, which will undoubtedl y go down in history as one of (if not) the greatest year in sports. '98 was special not only because of the achievements of its athletes and organizations, but because those events brought into the spotlight the magic of years past. With records being broken and teams vying for greatness, much attention was also focused on the great events in history that many of us never had the pleasure to see. Just as we hear about the 1927 Yankees and the 1975 Cincinnati Reds, so will the baseball enthusiasts of future years hear about the 1998 New York Yankees. Unquestionably the most dominant team in sports this past year, the Yankees didn't leave any questions unanswered in their quest for greatness. 114 regular season wins, 125 total wins, a 4-0 World Series sweep...

Behrend Soccer Wrap-up By Matt Buser staff writer The Behrend men's and women's soccer teams each enjoyed a great deal of success this season. Both set school records for wins in a season, the men with 13 and the women with 15, despite playing exceptionally strong schedules. The Behrend men finished the season 13-9. For the third consecutive year, the team earned a ranking in the NCAA Division III, North East Regional Poll. "This team had great chemistry," Assistant Coach Chuck Baranich said. "They really were a great group of guys. I enjoyed coaching them and really just being around them." "This season was a total team effort," Baranich continued. "The freshmen contributed and the upperclussmen played like we expected. One thing about this team, they had character, and they played hard every game from start to finish. The team loses only two seniors , so expect them to be even more competitive next year. The Behrend women enjoyed the finest season in the program's four yea...
