Farm , Garden and Orchard [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 27 February 1896

Farm , Garden and Orchard INSECTS ATTACKING FRUIT TREES i By Prof . W . G . Johnson . SCALE INSECTS . THE eggs of the oyster-shell bark-louse are whitish , and those of still other species are yellowish . Certain species do not lay eggs , but give birth to living young , as do the plant lice . The San Jose scale belong to this group , the young being produced alive . The number of generations annually among bark lice differs so widely with the various . species that no general statement can be made . . Scale insects have few natural enemies • outside of predaceous and parasite . insects . There are many species of insects that prey upon bark lice , and their work is undoubtedly of great value , keeping iriftny species down to comparatively uninjiirious numbers . There have been many exaggerated statements about the utility of natural enemies , since the successful introduction of the little Australian ladybug into California a few years ago , which so thoroughly cleared the orange o...

.-o When a little one is expected in the family hovr lovingly the parents plan » together for its future wellfare . They sometimes even forecast its education and career . Does this seem too early to anticipate while the child ia yet unborn ? It isnt . The child s destiny has already been partly mapped out by Nature according to the disposition and habits of the parents . The best plan a mother can make for the future happi ness of her unborn child is to maintain her own cheerfulness and health while her child s undeveloped being is still a part of hers . Her health at this critical period is of tremendous consequence to the little one s whole future existence . Every prospective mother will find direct nourishment , comfort and sustaining strength , in Dr . Pierce s Favorite Prescription . It will maintain her vitality both he ~ \ y and mental ; shorten the period of co-iinement and make labor easy and almost painless . It imparts strength and elasticity to the organs concerned in ...

CHURNING . [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 27 February 1896

CHURNING . G OOD butter can be made from sweet cream . More than that , it has been demonstrated that such butter will keep good as long as that made from sour cream , popular conviction to the contrary notwithstanding . It is claimed a slight degree of acid in the cream improves the flavor of the butter . These questions , like many others relating to butter making are so easily tested that butter makers need not take the assertion of any one , but can settle it in the own dairies . Most good butter makers prefer the cream to become slightly acid before churning , but the acid should not be carried too far , for if it is , the yield of butter will hot be as great , as the acid will consume , to a certain extent , the oil or butter portion of the cream . The cream should be churned at a teinperature of 50 to 60 degrees in the summer , and at 60 to 62 degrees in the winter . When milk is set in shallow pahs and allowed to stand thirty-six to • forty-eight hours at a temperature not v...
