i HORTIClLTLRE l [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 16 February 1907

i HORTIClLTLRE l ¦ TREATING FENCE POSTS TO INCREASE DURABILITY . The use of wood of all kinds Is ln- • creasing . Recent statistics have shown that even with the increased use of ¦ cement and steel there is an increasing demand for wood in all industries . The growth of the population and the desire of our merchants to compete in foreign markets is causing an increasing drain upon our forests until prices of all crude wood material are becoming very high . The development of ( he Middle West has brought about a great increase in use of fence posts . The last census reported the annual production of fence posts in the regular logging camps in the country as 8 , 715 , 061 . No figures exist to show how many times greater than this the annual cut from the home wood-lot- is , but by taking the total number of farms and their acreage and making a conservative allowance for fence posts enclosing each farm it has been estimated that upwards of 1 , 000 , 000 ,- 000 posts are set each year ....

U We have gotten better results from the Ruberoid M W Roofing than any other roofing of this style which f 1 we have tried , and we will probably use 3000 squares of this roof during the year 1906 . In fact , where we must contend with coal smoke , we have decided that we cannot afford to use any other kind of composition roofing . Yours truly . Such a recommendation from a prominent railroad company , who for many years has used Ruberoid under the severest conditions , only confirms the universal verdict that RUBEROID ROOFING IS THE BEST I THE STANDARD PAINT COMPANY . INITIATIVE AND REFERENDUM , OR DIRECT LEGISLATION . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 16 February 1907

INITIATIVE AND REFERENDUM , OR DIRECT LEGISLATION . In many publications of today we read , much of the needs of the initiative and referendum , and I will venture the assertion that there are a great many who , like myself , do not fully understand its meaning , or intents and purposes . I for one would like very much to have you fully explain the full meaning of the above term in your editorial department of The Ohio Farmer , for the benefit of myself and others . Possibly this may have been done already , and escaped my notice , as I am only human and am liable to overlook things , or make mistakes same as any one else who is at all busy . Your unhesitating manner of exposing frauds and graft , in your clean-cut editorials , should command the respect and support of every farmer In Ohio who ever wants anything better in the way of legislation , i—S . W . Burlingame , Noble Co ., O . The Initiative is simply the right of a certain percentage of the voters to i-iopose a law , ordin...

CURRENT COMMENT . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 16 February 1907

CURRENT COMMENT . The United States THE BROWNSVILLE Senate has worse DEBATE—THE than wasted some SHIP SUBSIDY , two weeks of time on the Brownsville debate . Worse than wasted , we say , because such an acrimonious debate , almost leading to blows , must harm the people , especially the colored people ; because it consumes valuable time needed for important legislation ; and because the Senate has no power to reverse the constitutional action of the President as commander-in-chief , in discharging one or a hundred soldiers on satisfactory evidence , and for the good of the service , just as he would and does discharge postmasters , Indian agents , etc ., for the good of the service , on the same degree and kind of evidence . Two investigating commissions unanimously agreed that the evidence in the case justified the Presidents action , and the Secretary of War recommended it . And the queer thing is that many who curse the President for degrading these colored criminals and protecto...

NOTES AND QUERIES . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 16 February 1907

NOTES AND QUERIES . Corn-and-cob Meal—Mounted Birds , etc . —What is the value of corn-and-cob meal per 100 lb . when corn meal is $ 1 . 20 ? Is corn-and-cob meal injurious to any kind of stock or poultry ? What is the width of the Ohio river at Cincinnati ? What is the law in regard to having mounted birds in possession ? W . O ., East Austintown , O . — According to Cowgills table , and the computed value of corn meal , when the latter is worth $ 1 . 20 the former is worth about 71 cents . About onefifth of the weight of well dried ear corn is cob . There is little nutriment in the cob , but it causes the meal to lie loose in the stomach so that the digestive juices can act upon the meal readily . It is not injurious but is beneficial to any kind of stock and to poultry when ground fine . If ground coarse the stock will reject all they can of the cob , and wnat they do eat passes through largely , undigested , and therefore is of little benefit aside from Its mechanical help in lo...
