William K . Wimsatt Revisits Georgetown [Newspaper Article] — Hoya — 11 February 1960

William K . Wimsatt Revisits Georgetown CATHARSIS ? ... Dr . Harmon of Georgetown and Dr . Wimsatt of Yale . by Greg _Savim As anyone who attended the Eta Sigma Phi lecture of February 4 will tell you , approaching a man the stature of Dr . William K . Wimsatt , Jr . of Yale University seems quite a task . But with the inspiration of Pete Martin , we managed to interview the doctor amidst the musty , Tudor atmosphere of Cop ¬ ley Lounge . Dr . Wimsatt immediately offered his regret that he had not kept in closer contact with his alma mater , Georgetown , for , he explained , his position in his university does not facilitate much contact with other institutions . But it was with genuine interest that he listened to an account of the Hilltop s latest scholastic laurels . The doctor seemed ( Continued on Page 8 )

The Council ± IlC _^ O U . HC 11 [Newspaper Article] — Hoya — 11 February 1960

The Council ± IlC _^ O U . HC 11 ( Page ) McAllister sobered up the group by referring to the situation as a horrible mistake . Then a vibrating pipe made a sound much like the old Beulah the Buzzer , and MeShane , ever ready with the witty reply , replied . . . Thank you . Roxe , again in his debating voice , asked a question of a few hundred words ( by rough estimate ) which boiled down to a what about it ? Mirabelli refused to accept the compromise and said that he wouldnt be responsible for the actions of the class on it . McAllister pointed out that since the attendance required for the M&B to break even was only 210 people , and that it was a University function , that it seemed to him unfair that a class of only 300 should be required to provide a fourth of the audience . McShane had stated earlier that it ¦ was the College that would have to provide the audience . The Axe Falls The Council eventually got around to passing the resolution . For those unskilled in t...

_Al _* t & Letters ( Continued on Page ) At the end of the talk , one member of the audience objected that the structure which the prominent critic had built had no relation to the play . The prominent critic s reply to this objection was , No , of course not . Need there be any comment on this laconic expression of criticism for criticism s sake ? If one takes a quick glance at the post-World War II American world of literature , the distinguishing feature is emaciation . Yet in the corresponding world of literary criticism , the distinguishing feature is belligerent aggrandizement . What writers in this period could even be called miniature Eliots or Hemingways or Faulkners ? Alen Ginsberg ? Pass on . Norman Mailer ? That which is reputed to be unique in Mailer s work was done much more graphically and with less self-consciousness by Henry Miller years before . In fact , Miller did it so well that some of his books are still banned in America and England . Well then , ...

Wimsatt ( Continued from Page 6 ) quite interested in our Honors Program which he saw as a compromise between Yale s Directed Studies Course and its Scholar of the House . More particularly , his interest dwelled on the Programs most recent product , George Giard . I have always regarded it as an excellent tribute , he exclaimed , for a school to have one or two Rhodes winners . He appeared pleasantly surprised to learn that Mr . Giard was also President of the Yard , commenting that , in his day , scholastic prowess was no asset in Yard candidacy . Dr . Wimsatt gave the impression that the president was once no more than a social director for Georgetown party life . Next we asked the doctor whether he might cite some differences he has discovered between non-sectarian , ivy Yale and Catholic Georgetown . Georgetown certainly has grown , he stated thoughtfully , but please dont ask me to compare it with Yale , I wouldnt be able . Dr . Wimsatt explained that what he meant was that th...

Junior President Relinquishes Post ( Continued from Page 1 ) obligations of the president . This presents the obvious complication of too much work for one officer , and so far there has been no official pronouncement of a solution . We can only assume that the other officials , Mr . McAllister , Mr . Broom , and Mr . Lanza will share in Mr . Raymonds burden . Just what parliamentary and efficiency difficulties this will propose is not certain —time will tell . This much is certain : there will be a greater work load for the class officers ; there are going 1 to be problems of protocol ( i . e ., who represents the class at official school events and to the ad ¬ ministration ) ; and there may be a question of ultimate responsibility . Yard President George Giard issued the following statement : After consultng with the other two Yard officers and the Class Constitution , I believe that Joe Raymond is eligible to take over the duties of the Junior Class Presidency . On the other side...

Letters ( Continued from Page 2 ) ball , and swimming teams ? We could have easily been given meal chits good in the dayhop cafeteria —which remained open . The only ways I have to judge the administration s obligations in this matter are the receipt I received at registration , and the precedents established in past vacations . This receipt says simply Room and Board —no exceptions given . As for precedence , the University has generally provided meals in former vacations . With these two things in mind , I can only conclude that the University acknowledges an obligation to serve meals during vacations . To deny me meals during the semester vacation is an indefensible repudiation of this obligation . DAN SCHLAFLY 61
