Commuaiesstecl . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 2 February 1870

Commuaiesstecl . MAYFIELD , Jan . 27 th , 1870 . To Revd . G . Libby : My dear Brother . —In the Sycamore TRUE SKPUBLICAN of Jan . 22 nd I find a communication from you , in which to my utter surprise , you deny the facts stated in the issue of Jan . 8 th . Far from wishing to create any unlovely feeling , or to say or do anything antagonistic to the spirit and temper of the gospel , I must be permitted to assert lu all candor , and in justice to the pecple of this neighborhood , that as far as my own knowledge of the facts in question extends , they are strictly and literally true . . Bear wilh me , my brother . I do not charge yon with misrepresentation , as you have charged the writer—it is too grave—the statement is unbecoming the lips of christian brethren , and especially of christian ministers . Retaliation was not the spirit of our Master , and therefore ought not to flud a place amongst his followers ; and whatever difference there may ba between us in judgement , as far as...

James Greenwood , the too celebuted casual of the Full Mall Gazette , relates much unotion , The Private Life of a Public Nuisance —t .-e . the domestic habits of the representative organ-grinder : and Georgia Augustus Sala , the most thorough-ly-travelled literary man in the world , has pictured him in his native Bohemia , where eomic liming is Art , and Literature is journalism and the stage . London , probably , is the greatest organgrinding centre in the world . At seven in the morning you may see the grinders in droves trudging over the bridges toward the southern half of the metropolis , organ on back , aud monkey on arm , prepared to lay strategic siege to the housewives of Camberwell and the park . But in New York there is no such army . At daybreak , you will see the grinders leave their homes in Baxter street , and deoart on their several ways . They have regular beats or div...

THE LUQKI MILLINER . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 2 February 1870

THE LUQKI MILLINER . Nineteen Million * •* . »»»*»*¦ J , en S 1 r -8 h « KecetwM the Flrat Five Millions or it . From the Troy ( N . Y . ) Times , 15 th . Some months ago we published a statement to the effect that Miss Gray , a milliner of Fort EdwarcL . had become the fortunate heir to $ 19 , 000 , 000 which her lover , a young Englishman , had willed to her upon his dying bed . The main fact in the case-the heirship—is true ; bnt we now learn that it was not to the lover , but to his father , that Miss Gray is indebted for her extraordinary good fortune . It seems the lover , on his return to England , like too many others , proved inconstant , and marr . ed another lady against hiB father swill . Whether it was remose at his fatthlessness or from some other carse , certain it is the young man died in about a year after his marriage , and left all his property to his father . The old gentleman was without heirs ; and not having become reconciled to his daughteriin-law , upon his ...

AN ILLINOIS INYALID . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 2 February 1870

AN ILLINOIS INYALID . | From the Boston Advertiser . ] Itellyou , ^ sir , that truth is stranger than fiction . Yes ? said I , with a studied effort to play the agreeable to the new comer . We were sitting at a plain but well spread table in the kitchen of a western farm house . Everything was on a generous scale , from the rolling prairie with its billowy reaches , down to the hay stacks and the big woodpile near the door . Within the house the same ample greeting was prominent I had spent the day since the December sunrise in hunting up section corners and « fife bUshing boundary lines for my host , We had all of us worked hard , and the measurements had proven remarkably correct , for the chain slipped smoothly along on the frozen snow . The great Lillycache sloo , in whose centre was a bottomless mire , was nicely crusted over , and the rank grass interwoven with the ice made the crossing safe . So we had passed ever where many a horse had been smothered in the mud while venturi...
