\w OFFICIAL PAPER OF BELTRAMI COUNTY. VCL. VI, NO. 33. IN LAK E JULIAN. Frank Myers, Drowned and Two Companions Nearly Perish. Up to Tuesday of this week the body of Frank Myers had not been found. As mentioned in our last issue, Prank was drowned in Lake Julian Oct 8. In com pany with two companions he started across the lake in the dark for their homesteads, being on their return from Dakota. The boat was old and untrust worthy and began to fill rapidly. Myers stepped on the side of the boat and over it went. He being a good swimmer started for shore. Myers went down a hundred yards from the boat. His com panions clung to the boat, yell ing for help. It was nearly an hour before their cries attracted the attention of McKnight, who lives on the western lake shore. He rowed out and hauled to shore the upset boat with the two men clinging to it. David Simons, one of the men, was nearly dead with the cold by this time, having been in the water one hour and forty minutes. For five hour...

As for me, I will hereafter Patronize the stores at home. A. M. G. STICK TO YOUR CLAIMS. AGAIN we would caution the homesteaders of the county not to sell out their claims as soon as they get a clear title, as is so commonly done in newboots countries. To one who has lo cated among the lonely pines and wrestled for five years with hardships and solitude, the jingle of gold in the hands of a pros pective buyer is a musical sound. He can not expect to receive now the full value of his claim, and the one who sells good agricul tural land at the "going price "in any new community is making a p...

r:.fc f~. OFFICIAL PAPER OF BELTRAMI COUNTY. VOL. VI, NO. 34. T. B. WALKER'S LOGGIN ROA Is Now Under Construction From Wheelock to AHda, In Bear Creek Town, and Has a Fine Line of Survey and Grade. When the people of Bernidji were disappointed in the building of the T. B. Walker sawmill at this place, they little thought that the veteran pine land owner would talfe up the other side of the business and begin the work of development of those parts of the county that had not thereto fore had any railway accommo dations. But within three months after his announcement that he would have to give up the build ing of a mill at Bemidji, Mr. Walker sent P. J. Kline into the Moose and Bear Creek country with a crew of surveyors to spy out the land for a logging rail way. The crew did its work so well that after the first prelimin ary reports went in, the Great Northern railway people con cluded that it was a fine thing to have, and offered to take the business off the hands of Mr. Walker, und...

The Bemidji Pioneer. KAISER & GREELEY, Publishers Entered In the postofhee at Bomidji as aeeond-clnvB njatter. PUBLISHED EVERY THCK8DAY. Official County and City Paper. HOLD YOUR CLAIMS. LASTthe week we called attention to growing demand for agricultural land. How this ap plies to Northern Minnesota is shown by the sales of state lands by Auditor punn. Owing to the unprecedented demand for state lands, he was obliged to cancel the sales scheduled in Morrison and Benton counties. The law permits the sale of only 100,000 acres in one year. Up to last Friday he had sold 62,000 acres at the best prices ever realized in the state. The recent sale in this county emphasized the fact, that even in the backwoods, the dynamite of demand is forcing farm soil upwards. Throughout the north ern half of the state the increase of values are surprising to even the oldest settlers. The prices have ranged from $8 to $25 an acre. that the land has boon sold almost exclusively to bona fide homo seek...

*w Village Order Case. Next Saturday is the date set for the taking of testimony be fore Clerk of Court Speelman in the village orders case. It will be remembered that certain citi zens, headed by W. Schroeder, protested against the payment of various village orders, claiming they were illegal. An injunction against their payment, until their legality could be passed upon, was served upon the village treasurer. It was set aside by Jude McClenahan. An appeal was taken, and last week the Su preme court affirmed the decis ion of the judge. Last week's News claimed that this decision of the Supreme court was a defeat to the Schroe der crowd, but Attorney Craw ford still smiles. In fact, the plaintiffs seem to have things as they want them. They have kept the orders tied up all summer by the injunction methods, and it is hardly probable that a treas urer would pay the orders at this time, so close upon the date set for its hearing. Upon this pre sumption, the plaintiffs did not appear bef...
