Motley, the diplomat and historian, died in England on the 30th tilt Prof. Langston assures his colored breth ren that the President means well to them. lit Carmel, 111., so lately devastated by a hurricane, is calling on the public for help to tide over their sufferings and loss. Some of the N. York journals assent that Tilden the reformer, will be a candi date for the V. S. Senate, to succeed Senator Conkling, whose term expires in 1879, should there be a hopeful chance in the stripe of the Legislature. In salaries alone the courts of New York city cost over a million of dollars. There are forty-seven judges employed with salaries ranging from sil to fifteen thousand dollars each. A Jackson, Miss., letter announces that Judge Lee, the United States District At torney for the district in which occurred the Chisholin massacre, has commenced an investigation into the tragedy. Judge Lee left Jackson for Meridian on June 5th, meet J. M. Wells and Mrs. Chisholm. Wells is fully acquainted with all the facts of the massacre. It is said with some show of irritation that there are 320 newspaper correspond' ents in Roumania, yet not one of them able to say where or when the Russians will cross the Danube. The reason of this that the Ruisians keep their military plans so closely to themselves that nobody is awe to give any real information concerning we two points about which the world is curious. Processions, reviews, speeches, welcomes and bunting are plen tiful. Barnum is hopeful that Charier Ross will be delivered up in response to his offer of f 10.000 reward. The great showman will succeed in securing that end if it is practicable. Another larsre fire broke out in Marble- head Boston burning orer gome fifteen acres, about 2 o'clock on Monday morning.
