The elections last Tuesday In several states and municipalities resulted pretty much in an equal division of the offices. The most surprising' result in the entire con test was in Massachusetts where the democrats came within 5,000 or 0,000 of electing their govern or, whereas two years ago the re publicans had 60,000 majority. The effect, in a moral way, was a democratic victory. Hhodc Island elected a full set of republican officials, while Vir ginia chose officials from the op posite party. A Scrap in the Jail. "When the cat's away the mice will play" is an old saw, which was thoroughly illustrated in the Lincoln county jail on Tuesday morning of this week during the temporary ahsence of SherilT Stevens. It appears that there are about fifteen prisoners in the county jail which numhi'r will he materially reduced hy the time district court adjourns and that all sons of arguments are in dulged in, not merely for argu ments sake, hut in order to kill time and "drive dull care away." On the morning in qucstinn, a discussion arose between a pris oner called "Koreiguor .loe" and another named U.irl inir, both hav ing received their sentence from . this place. As the discussion progressed, the hoys grew warm, much to the amusement of the other prisoners. Words failing to convince, they decided to re sort to a passage at arms, and have it out in the old style, with out gloves. Seconds were chosen and a referee appointed, straight Queetisbury rules adopted, the art icles callin...
