Heavy, unreasonable and oppressive taxation is an exhaustive proceas upon the labor of a community. A system of this kind continued for years must and will produce evil consequences. The present situation requires serious investigation into public affairs in order to ascertain the true cause, or causes, of the financial crisis now upon us. Some are apt to ascribe the wide-spread calami ty to the failure of great railway project8 and the collapse of a few inflated finan cial houses, while the great, nay, the real causes, are lost sight of. The Governmen t by its various arrangements for gather ing taxes reaches every man and woman in the land. This is a never-ending pro- cess. Now, let us see what amount the Federal Government has been drawing from the labor of the people. The Democrat. PITTSBURGH! Failure the Banking House of McVay & Co. On the door of Ira B. McVay 4 Co. 'a banking bou, coruerof Fiub, avenue and Smithfield street, was posted the following notice about ten o'clock yesterday morn - PITTSBURGH, Nov. 7. "Owing to the complication growing ont of the suspension of our eastern cor respondent, we are compelled to close our doors. "IRA B. M'VAY & Co." Soon after the announcement was made a large crowd gathered around tie doors, and various speculations were indulged in regarding the cause of suspension. Sifting all the rumors thai prevailed, it is stated they wore forced to ibis cause by the lail WO of Lloyd, Hamilton & Co., and other eastern houses. The firm have among their deposits $10,000 belonging to. the city, embracing the receipts f the Mayor's Oflice during October.
